cutting nipple for added cereal?

I've destroyed 3 nipples this evening trying to make the hole big enough (and made it too big) for the addition of rice cereal to the bottle...  how should I be doing it?

Re: cutting nipple for added cereal?

  • Hello,

I sterlized a safety pin and made the hole a little bigger. Just on one bottle and we call that are cereal bottle. Good luck!

  • Loading the player...
  • my husband cut it with a sharp knife...he fust used the tip of the knife and cut little strips in it...it works well..GL

  • I don't know what kind of bottle you are using, but the best bet is just to find the Y cut nipples and use them so you don't destroy all of your nipples.  I have cut mine though, using a really sharp knife tip, but I always cut smaller than I think I will need.  DS1 had to have a good bit of rice added to keep him from puking it all up, so our holes were kinda big.

This, and I don't think most pediatricians recommend feeding it to them through a bottle.

A little more about feeding baby cereal from a bottle...

Doctors and other experts recommend that you never give baby cereal in a bottle unless recommended by baby's doctor for a specific medical condition. Here are some of their reasons:

    • It is a choking hazard.
    • The cereal takes away from the amount of milk in the bottle (adds carbohydrates and dilutes the nutrient density), and baby may not get adequate milk volume for proper growth and development.
    • Baby is being given a higher concentration of calories without being able to regulate her own intake. This can lead to weight problems in the future.

  • My Dr suggested it because of LO's acid Reflux.  I am only supposed to put 1 tsp/1oz formula in the bottle.  I am not "starting solids" until 4 months.
  • y cut nipples are your friend
