Are there really that many 32 pound infants?

I just can't imagine carrying around 32 pounds on infant in a carrier. DH and I were talking about it: DS was 19 pounds by 5 months (he was in the 95th percentile) and that's when I bumped him up to a convertible rear-facing car seat because he was WAY too heavy to carry around PLUS his legs were getting too long for his carrier. He was sitting up and crawling by then and seemed to sit back further in the convertible so he had more leg room.

DS weighs 32 pounds NOW (he'll be 3 in January) and I can't imagine lugging that much weight AND the weight of a carrier around.

We've decided the Snugride 32 is not worth it based on these facts and we'll be going with the regular Snugride. Is there something that I'm missing? Are there really THAT many 32 pound infants?

(Note: We thought about the fact that in a crash objects/babies can feel heavier due to momentum but decided that the safety precautions/crash tests take these facts into consideration when determining max weight limits for the seats.)

  • I wonder this also.  My DD outgrew the height limit on the regular snugride WAY before she got to the weight limit.  And I agree, that even if you have a 32lb infant who's short enough to fit in the infant seat, chances of being able to lift that seat off the ground with the kid in it are slim to none.

  • You know I have to agree with you, I can't imagine luging around a 32 lb baby and a 12 lb carseat at the same time, I'm not exactly Hercules!

I've been debating on which carseat to buy, I think we're going to go with the Snugride but still not sure if we'll go with the regular one or the snugride32.... My DH seems to think that the baby will be in it for a while... I on the other hand am not so sure.... I know babies grow fast! So my jury's still out.... let me know what you think please!

  • My SS is just shy of 3, and weighs about 30lbs. I get tired carrying him on my hip... I can't imagine doing it with one hand in a carrier!

  • I have never heard of a 32 lb infant - maybe the option exists for people who want to keep their child rear facing longer ?? I agree, though, a convertible makes more sense in that case! We will be transitioning DD to one soon, because her feet are hanging out now and we're about to add #2 to the mix :)

  • We decided to go with the SnugRide 32 just because DH is big and was a big baby. Granted we probably wont be able to carry our baby around in his carrier if he stayed in it for a while but we figured there was less of a chance he'd outgrow it too fast if that makes sense?

*Most* babies are too long for the infant carrier by about 10-12 months which is *usually* before they hit 32 pounds. I say *most* because there are exceptions, but DS was HUGE and he's just now hitting 32 pounds.

I think we'll save a few bucks and go with the regular Snugride like we had for DS.

  • I figured once DC will be that big, I won't be carrying them around in the carrier anymore, but it would still be safer in the car for them.  I don't have this car seat, but mine has a higher weight limit as well.

  • I would recommend to anyone who is having a hard time deciding on carseats and or worried about the growth of their child in the current carseat to go to www.safekids.org and find a seat check for child passenger safety in their area.  As a child passenger safety technician, I can not emphasize strongly enough to purchase what is affordable, works for your vehicle, and what you are comfortable with.  I would also recommend keeping your carseat rear facing as long and the child is still in the rear facing weight category even if his or her legs are a little squished.  This is the safest position for your child due to lack of muscle control and crash dynamics.  Not only are the seat checks free, but they can save your childs life.  In my experience installing them I have found many people that did not have the seat installed correctly such as tight enough or too tight and the best protection for your child is to educate yourself.  I hope this helps anyone who may be interested.
  • I'm going with the Snugride 32, but only because it happens to be the pattern I have decided on.  There's no way I'll be carrying around a 32lb baby in a carrier!
  • The reason why we were looking at the snugride 32 is for the length, not the weight issue.

Ditto. The extra length is why we are getting it.

  • The extra length might be worth it, but I'd imagine even for tall babies like DS you'd have to have them in the carrier until a year to outgrow that. The weight, def not!

Actually, the thing that made me NOT get an infant seat with a higher weight limit was that at least for the two Graco options on the market when I was pregnant with DD (Snugride and Safeseat), the Snugride got MUCH better safety ratings. Reason being, it only had to be tested up to 22 lbs -- it scored about evenly with the Safeseat at that weight limit. BUT the Safeseat scored poorly at the higher weights. So I figured that in the 20-30 lb range, DD would be safer in a convertible seat. (She's about 28 lbs now, still rear-facing in her Britax Boulevard with PLENTY of room to grow in both height and weight.)

I'm not sure if that's still the case, as we'll be reusing our Snugride so I haven't investigated the latest developments in infant seats.

  • LOL my 3 year old is still not 30lbs!
