2nd Trimester

Anyone else late in finding out sex?

My doc doesn't do the 'big' u/s until 22-23 weeks.

I couldn't go week 22 because we'll be in San Diego.  Week 23, DS1 will be at Outdoor Lab and we want the boys to go with us.

We're scheduled for Oct 30, and I'll be 24 weeks.  It seems like a LONG wait.

  • I didn't have my official big u/s until 25 weeks. With DS, we had it at 23 weeks. My doctor likes to wait for some reason. This time I was lucky enough to know someone who is in u/s school, so I got a student scan for free at close to 19 weeks. I know how you feel though, waiting is torture!

  • We have our big u/s scheduled this Wednesday and I'll be 21 weeks. The wait seems like forever!
  • Ugh, that sounds far along! On the plus side you'll almost be in 3rd tri...!

Mines on Wednesday too, I'm two days behind you :) yea!!!

  • We're late in finding out the sex, too.  We'll find out when I'm somewhere around 40 weeks!  Stick out tongue
  • My midwife wanted me to wait until 22-23 weeks but I said " no way hose" and we comprimised at 20 weeks. My appointment is scheduled for next monday!
  • I recommend getting it later!!!!

We had our "big" u/s early...around 18w (two days before our move out of state) and the technician did not get a good luck at the heart and was only able to identify 3 chambers. First OB said this was normal b/c the baby was tiny and it was hard to see but since everything else looked good she didn't plan on repeating the u/s. I moved out of state and switched OBs and when I mentioned this to her she was shocked. More than anything b/c my first OB is at one of the best OB/GYN specialty hospitals in the country and that's where  u/s was done and b/c if the baby is missing a chamber it is VERY serious.  She ordered a second u/s (at 25w) to make sure there are four chambers.

I was crying my eyes out for hours when she said most commonly the left ventricle is missing and the options are "compassionate care" and a heart transplant. She was nice enough to meet me at the hospital later that day to do a quick u/s herself to see if the baby was healthy. If we had waited just a few weeks longer, we wouldn't have been terrified for no reason!

I know it's exciting to find out the sex- but if it's done later they can get a better look at the organs which are larger, better developed, and easier to see- the whole purpose of the "big" ultrasound....That is probably why your practice does the 2nd Tri u/s later. I hope that your baby is healthy when you do get to see him/her! Oct. 30 will be here before you know it!:)
