Roughing up nipples?

So, my MIL asked if I have started "roughing up" my nipples yet. For those of you that have/been breastfeeding, is it necessary to rough up the nipples?

Definitely an old wives tale- and my MIL asked me the exact same thing. Then proceeded to tell me how she did it. I thought MH was going to throw up!

What you DO want to do is buy a tube of lanolin cream (like Lansinoh) and slather it on before during and after every feed for the first few days.
