Teething and Tylenol or Motrin

My son is 8.5 months and last few weeks have been crazy and I assume it is teething since there are no other signs of anything except that he always needs to be biting on something, but when he becomes a lunatic, I give him tylenol and if that does not help, my next dose is motrin....but...how much is too much, can I give it to him everyday or is that overboard...I just feel like one of those takes his edge off and he is not a total lunatic ALL day then and sleeps better at night too.  So how much is too much, I dont want to over-do it either?

Re: Teething and Tylenol or Motrin

  • Technically, he should be fine as long as you're giving him only the recommended dose and waiting the appropriate amt of time before giving him another.  I, personally would be uncomfortable about giving it every day and would probably talk to the ped for suggestions.  If you suspect it's teething, you could try other things, like teething tablets, teething toys, or a wet washcloth that has been frozen to chew on.
  • Loading the player...
  • Our pedi told us the motrin is better for pain.

They also gave us a sheet of paper telling us for both what we could give and how many times a day.

I would call your doctor about how much and how often.

  • I have found that Motrin is better for teething pain, and I usually only give it at bedtime (if it's really bad I'll give it at naptime, too)...like you I don't like to over-medicate. During the day I give cold teethers, cold foods and water, and distract as much as possible.
