Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Anyone else's dr. not monitor hcg to zero?

It seems like everyone's dr checks hcg until it gets back to zero after a mc. I saw a different dr in the practice when I first mc.  At that point my hcg was somewhere in the 3000s, and she told me we would monitor my levels back to zero.  But then my dr decided not to check them at all.

At this point it's a moot point, because I've had a post mc period, but I'm just curious if anyone else didn't get their levels checked.

Re: Anyone else's dr. not monitor hcg to zero?

  • My doctor didn't monitor mine to zero, I had a D&E though.  I took a test a couple of weeks later and it was a BFN so I knew they were gone.

  • After my first m/c they monitored me for about a week, then ran an u/s after 2 weeks and saw follies developing, so they didn't run any more betas.  After my 2nd, they didn't do squat.  No blood draws.  Nuthin.  I took hpts for about 2 weeks after each loss to see that it went negative and that's it.
  • Mine didn't. With the 2nd loss levels were already 6 when I mc. With the 3rd loss I had been at 3700 ish a few days prior and they decided not to test once I passed the "products of conception" (their term... I don't really like it).

  • Nope.  Mine didn't even draw blood at my f/u.
  • Nope, but my doctor's don't even do betas at all.
  • My OB didn't check my levels at all, which surprised my RE, since we had told the OB that we wanted to start trying again soon.
  • Mine drew blood and then never got back to me with the results. Confused

  • Mine didn't monitor my HCG at all after my D&C.

  • D&C here.

OB told me that if I hadn't had my AF by my 4 week follow up appt that we would do a blood draw to check HCG.  Otherwise he doesn't follow it for D&C's.

I'm almost 3 weeks out and have POAS and only see a faint faint line so I think I'm gonna be just fine.

If you're concerned I'd say POAS at 3-4 weeks post loss.  If you're seeing a definite line I'd ask for the draw.

I think the concerns about complications are greater with a natural loss than a D&C.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • My doctor didn't ever check my levels. The only blood test I got was for blood typing.
  • Mine did not. I think it is not routine because insurance doesn't want to cover it?? I may be wrong though.

  • Mine did not since my levels were at 3200. He just told me to take a pregnancy test 2 weeks later, which of course resulted in a negative.
  • I just went for my 2 week f/u on Wednesday, and my dr. did not do any draws.
  • I just had a D and C yesterday, but nobody had said anything about them monitoring my HCG.
  • My doctor did not monitor my hcg level after both of my miscarriages. What I think is really ironic is that I ended up getting AF 42 days after the D&C and two weeks after that my hcg level was an 8 (at my PCP's appointment). For whatever reason, I thought it had to be a 0 before AF arrives. I guess not.?
