what to do when Ferber doesn't cut it?

So we Ferberized a few weeks ago and it worked great for the first week, but we are continuing to have nights of hour long crying pretty much every other night.  I continue to use the Ferber method on those nights, but it's getting old.  It's usually anywhere from 11pm to 1am that I know he'll be waking and crying for a good hour before he finally gives in.  Once he gives in he sleeps like a champ till morning.  Any suggestions?  Should I try a different method?  Anyone have any tricks or tips??  Thanks!
