How will I pump gas?

Ok, so while I was at the gas station the other day I realized that when I'm driving alone with the baby and need gas, how will I pump it?  Do I leave the door open, or just the windows?  I'm in FL and it's still very warm and it's too hot to just let the baby sit in a closed up car, but what about the fumes?

It really confused me.

Re: How will I pump gas?

  • Easy. Move to NJ. I've never pumped my own gas. Geeked

  • hmmm.. move to NJ, we dont pump our own gas... haha

I think its ok to leave baby in the car when you're standing right next to it

  • I have left baby in car while I am pumping the gas.  If I have to go inside to prepay then I take baby with me.  The fumes will not get in the car unless I spill some gas on me.  Don't worry too much about it.
  • Pay at the pump and you can stand right there and watch LO, I would just crack the windows away from the gas pump, or you can leave the car running and the a/c on and get back in when you get the pump to running. I know it says not to pump gas in a running car but it won't hurt anything. I do it all the time.
  • I will just open the windows.  Henry's seat is on the passenger side (in the back seat of course) so I am sure I will go around to the window and talk to him and make sure he isn't getting too hot.

I doubt the few fumes you smell will hurt your LO.

  • I live in Houston so the heat and humidity are a constant around here.  I just pay at the pump and pump away.  The car is usually cooled from running the ac and will stay cool for awhile - it's not going to automatically jump 200 degrees in the car in the 5 minutes it takes to pump gas.  Don't worry about it.

Please don't ever do this!  It is very dangerous.... and has seriously injured people.

  • I just leave DS in the car and crack the window...don't worry it will be fine.

  • Boy do I miss NJ! I grew up there and always had my gas pumped for me. CT winters are cold and I hate getting out to pump on my own.. now if only I could talk DH into moving back to NJ.

  • When my son was younger, I always paid at the pump. If for some reason I had to go inside he came with me.
  • I never thought of this!!! Thanks for asking!

  • I pay at the pump and leave my little ones in the car. I smell more gas on the outside than they do on the inside.

I find that it doesn't take me more than a few minute to pump a full tank...if it is not crazy hot, I leave the windows up.

Yes, I have heard that this is dangerous. It is something with the static. It is actually listed as a warning on the pump to turn the engine off and don't re-enter the car. I have actually seen on the news wear a lady did this a a year or so ago and was video taped on fire.
