Breastfeeding

What is your BF goal?

Initially I said 3-4 mo but now a month has nearly come and gone and I think I can do this-no problem. It will all depend on my supply etc once I go back to work in Mid August.  The only time it gets hard is the nightime feedings-it is then I want to use formula:(

What is your BF goal and did surpass your intial goal and make a new one?? Or did you shorten your goal??

Re: What is your BF goal?

  • I never really had a goal per se in the beginning.  Now that it's going so well my goal is now a year.  I want to make it to a point where if my supply tanks I don't need to figure out the whole formula thing since DS could theoretically go straight to cow's milk at a year.  But I'm not opposed to going past a year either.

  • My initial goal with DD was 6 months, I nursed her until just shy of 15 months so I far exceeded that goal.

With DS my goal is 1 year just to avoid formula, but I'm willing to go past 1 year again and most likely will.

  • My original long term goal was 3 months, short term was one more week :)
Now my goal is 6 months.  But we do a bottle of formula at bedtime  - special formula for her reflux.  Turns out, that bottle, given by DH is a fabulous break :)

  • It was 1 year, but here we are at 14 months.

HAve you thought about maybe pumping so your DH can help you out with the nightime feedings?

Anyways, my first goal was another week.  And then 3 months.  Right now it's 6 months with the hopes of being able to make it to 1 yr.  It is hard though being back at work and pumping.

  • I wanted to make it a year and I just stopped at 18 months.  I think I could have gone another year, but we are ttc now so we stopped now.

  • I have a pump but only just got serious about pumping last week and I need to est a supply for our trip to mexico in two weeks and going back to work in 5weeks so until that is est Dh can't really help w/ feedings unless we go to formula.

  • With #1, my 1st goal was 6 months.  I made it to then and set a new goal of 1 year. We stopped when DD was 15 monhts.

With #2, my goal was 1 year.  We have been going 10 months strong and have had 3 separate trips away from DS totalling 3 weeks of time. So, I don't see any reason we can't make it to 1 year.

  • i started with a goal of 3 weeks= check

    then 6 weeks= check

    then 12 weeks/3 months =check

now its 6 months=on the horizon

then i will take it month by month but i am really enjoying it and could see going past a year if it was mutually agreed upon by both parties lol. it will depend on my supply and how pumping at work goes.

  • While I was pregnant, my goal was just to give it an honest try and do my best. ?I had a difficult time and due to many factors, I started EPing. ?My goal is to give my son breast milk for one year. ?I have a HUGE freezer stash, so I could stop pumping prior to a year and continue to feed BM. ?Good news... I latched him on today with no problems (posted about this earlier). ?I just latched him again! ?I am so excited! ?Hoping to continue to BF as well as pump. ?I have a huge supply (pump an average of close to 70 oz a day) so I need to continue to pump. ?Plus, the longer he has my milk, the better for him and our check book! ?:)

  • I have a lot of goals.  Initially it was to be able to bf.  Then, I wanted to make 6 weeks.  Now that I'm past that goal, I want to make it til I go back to work 16 weeks.  After that, I'd like to make 6 months and evaluate from there, depending on how pumping at work is going.  I will do it as long as it makes sense for the two of us.  Now that we're established, I love bf'ing.
  • My initial goal was "at least one year and then after that, whatever we feel like."  Once we got past a year I didn't really have any specific goal, but I guess i had in my mind that at least 18 months was a good target.

After we got past 18 months, I really did want to keep bfing at least through our trip to England in June (which was at about 20 months old), because having nursing in my toolkit would be really helpful on the long flights and comforting to DD in a strange environment.

Now are at 21 months and I have no specific goals, but the WHO's recommendation of at least 2 years would be nice.  But if she self-weans before that I would be ok with it (but I doubt she will, she loves nursing).

At this point I think I'll probably just go until she's done, whenever that may be.

  • My goal is to EBF until 3 months when he starts daycare.  After that, if I need to supplement with formula at daycare I will, but hopefully my supply will stay up once I return to work.

  • I set weekly goals - I really didn't think I was going to make it in the beginning. Once he was 4 mos it was second nature for both of us, and now I'm like "How am I going to stop?" :) My ultimate goal was 1 year, but he'll be 1 in a week, so now my goal is to have him completely weaned by age 2.
  • Initially l didn't have a goal.  When ds came, and bfing was not easy and I did not have enough of a supply and had to pump round the clock after feedings, my goal became to do it until my supply was up enough to actually see if I liked it.  I knew if I said 1 month, and my supply wasn't up, it would be easy to quit.  Once my supply was up, I decided on a goal of 6 months, for sure.  At that point I am sure I will be able to go longer.

I always said at least a year - I'd love him to self wean but I'm not sure if I'd go past 2 or not...guess we'll see!

    this, exactly.

  • one year and we are going to make it. you should come over to the parenting after a loss board!!!
  • My goal has been ever changing.  Pre-pg (like while TTC before I knew anything about bfing), I thought 6 months.  Then while I was pg and did some research I changed my goal to 1 year.  Then after DD was born and everything was going well, I read about the WHO's recommendation of 2 years and about child led weaning.  So my ultimate goal changed to at least 2 years and to try to follow child led weaning.

DD is 3 years old and nursing 1-2x a day.  I haven't followed child led weaning exactly.  I have weaned certain feedings and would actually love it if she would just be done now.  She's not ready so I'm trying to wean her down to just the morning session.  Her latch is horrible now, and I've been dealing with deep teeth marks on my nipples for months now.  If not for that, I wouldn't care how often or how long she wanted to nurse.

  • I've never though of it as "goal" but I plan to begin weaning to cow's milk throughout the 11th month and hopefully be done with nursing around her first birthday. Of course I will check with her pedi first about the milk.
  • I didn't really have a goal in mind to start with.  But now that I've been doing this almost 3 months I'm hoping I can make it to a year.  I go back to work in August though, so we'll see how it goes with pumping at work.  I'm not sure i'll have enough milk to keep  up with them.  I really don't know if I'll be able to pump more than once during my work day.  We give them formula from time to time already, so I'm not opposed to it.  So I guess I'm hoping that maybe with 1 bottle feeding a day and pumping I can keep up with the feedings while I'm away.  I plan to nurse them in the morning and evening when I'm home.  I have 60 oz frozen now, so hopefully within the next month I'll be able to freeze a bunch more to help keep things going.
  • My original goal was 6 months, but now I'm thinking I'll continue EBFing until Thanksgiving break (she'll be 9 months then). If I go that far, I might as well just finish out the first year.  So it's basically up in the air, but definitely more than 6 months.
  • My goal was about a year. I really didn't mind if it went over a bit but now dd has been refusing the breast in the am and the afternoon she will only take a sip or 2. So It's been really at night when she favors nursing now. I'm glad because although it will be hard and sad for me, i won't have to worry about her having a hard time. I'm so proud of myself because no one in my family has bf.

  • At first it was 3 months.  Now that I'm almost to that point I really feel like we can make it for at least 12 months.
  • Initial goal was 6 months and we'll definitely reach that. Now my goal is 12 months, and I'm pretty confident about it. I really enjoy BFing.

  • Four weeks (one week more than with my twins) - check

Until I returned to work at nine weeks - check

One month after returning to work and pumping - check

Six months - working on it.

  • I want to go at least a year.  Orginally I intended to wean around a year because we'd like to TTC 2.  I'm 38 so there's a time crunch feeling.

But now I hate the idea of short changing DS so we may do a more gentle weaning when he's ready.

  • My goal is definitely 1 year minimum. I'll probably start trying to wean him at that point because we're going to TTC not long after that.
  • My goal is 6 months....I do feel like you though, at night I wish I used formula. But I think it's due to the fact DH can go back to sleep and I have to stay up to feed DS.
  • My goal with DD was 6 months then when I reached that I moved it to a year, sure that I would push weaning at that point but was still not ready and decided to let her self wean which she did at 20 months.
  • I've been EPing since DS was 2 weeks old.  My initial goal is six months, but I would love to make it a whole year
