DS HATES tummy time...help!

DS hates doing tummy time. He has still not lifted himself up while doing tummy time. He just lays there and protests. He can hold his head up if sitting on our laps or while holding him  upright, but refuses to do it while on his tummy. I prop him up with the small boppy that came with his playmat, but he just lays there and wimpers until we pick him up.

I'm wishing we would have started tummy time sooner, but the pedi told us to wait until his belly button stub fell off and then he was in a cast for 5 weeks treating his clubfoot, so by the time he got out of that and into his brace, I think it has affected his wanting to be on his tummy.

Any ideas on what I can try to get him to like tummy time or at least push himself up while on his tummy?

Thanks!

  • Dd hated tummy time until she learned to roll over.  She rolls over without any problems now but she still sometimes gets annoyed when she's on her tummy.  The only thing dd liked when she was on her tummy is looking in a mirror.  I took the mirror off the activity mat and put it on the floor.  I'd also lay on the floor as well so we'd be eye level when she did lift her head for a fleeting moment.

  • Hayden has been doing tummy time since a week old and still hates it! There are times he won't lift his head at all and just lays there and cries. For a while, I used my full sized boppy to prop him on and got him to start lifting his head. Now I don't use it and he will lift it. I know he is capable of doing it, just stubborn.

Good ideas! Thanks! I'll try the mirror, since he does like looking in the mirror in our room. I also get down on the floor with him and try to get him to look up.

  • How long should he do tummy time everyday? How many times per day?
  • My DD also hated it.  She would love to lay on my tummy though (while I was laying on my back) and she got really good at lifting her head that way. Then she didn't mind being on the floor as much.

    Same here!

FWIW most babies hate tummy time until they can sucessfully roll then they usually don't mind being on their bellys

  • My guys hated it at first too. Now they don't mind it all although they roll over almost instantaneaously.  I second the mirror idea as well as some other toys to look.  I have this baby einstend coloful light up thing that they love to look at on their tummy.

  • OMG DS hated it too. Even past being roll over he hated it. He never did like it.

We tried everything: mirrors, toys, boppies of all size, and still we had scream city. Like yours, he was fine supporting his head from a very early age, he just didn't want to be on his belly.

There are two things you can do:

    1) grit through the crying and have him to it anyway. 15 min a day. You can put him on your chest and lie on the floor. This does count as tummy time! I found DS preferred this somewhaat, although still cried.

    2) stop. he'll do it when he's ready. Our son now sleeps on his stomach. Go figure!

Thanks! I'll give this a try. So I should lay completely flat or is reclining in a chair ok?
