what's considered a "big baby"?

I think any baby over 9lbs is probably considered big.

DS was 8lbs even. SO many people have commented on how huge that is and even asked me if I had GD!  I don't think 8lbs is big, just healthy.

WDYT?

Re: what's considered a "big baby"?

  • I consider above 8 lbs on the big side and above 9 lbs as very big. (DS was 8lbs 3oz.)

  • Well, DS was 6 lbs, 8 oz...and that was plenty big thank you:)

But as far as other people's babies, I don't bat an eyelash until they hit 9 pounds.  My DH's cousin's baby was over 11 pounds...now that is a big baby!

  • I consider 9+ lbs a big baby.

Average weight at our hospital is 8 lbs. DD was 8.1. I don't consider that small, but I don't consider it a "big baby!" either ;)

  • i would say 9+

DS was 7 lb 2 oz, and i thought i was going to break him!

  • I usually don't think big baby unless over 9 lbs.

  • DD was just shy of 8lbs and was in the 50th percentile for baby girls.  Baby boys apparently tend to be heavier at birth.
  • I would agree with the 9lb mark as the beginning of being "big".

Even the L&D nurses kept commenting on how big DS was (he was 9lb,1oz at birth & 21.5"). At the time I thought he was teeny tiny. LOL

  • Definitely not 8 lbs. I think that's kind of average. DS was 9lbs 12oz, and everyone said he was huge!
  • I generally consider anything over 8 pounds to be pretty big. In my family, we just seem to have smaller babies The largest of my siblings and our kids weighed in at 7 lbs 6 oz and our extended family is similarly small-DS was 5 lbs 3 oz. I wouldn't gawk over a baby your DS's size though, that's not huge.
  • I won't go "Whoa!  That is a big baby!" unless the kid is at least 9 lbs., more like 9 1/2.

That said, fetal macrosomia is defined as 8lbs. 13oz.

  • My DS was9lbs 2oz and everyone in L&D said how huge he was, especially coming from me since Im only 5'0". My last growth u/s had measured him at 10lbs 15oz so I was actually surprised at how small he was comparatively! I consider big baby=over 9lbs though.

    what?

  • DD was 9lbs, 2 oz at birth and I got told that she was big.  A couple of weeks later, my cousin had an 11 pound DS.  I think once they hit 9 pounds it is getting big.  DD was all cheeks!!
  • DS was 8lb 12oz- and everyone, including me, thought that was pretty huge. I'm pretty short and little. so for me, it seemed huge.?

  • DS was 9 lbs even.  I think 9 lbs and up is big.  8 seems pretty normal.
  • DS was 9 lbs. 5 oz.  I am only 5 ft. 2 in.  I had one tiny tear too!  But compared to others yes he was big but perfect.  I would say over 9 lbs is.  Especially sicne he was my first!!!!  God bless my next ones.
  • I consider 8+ big. ?DS was 8lb15oz and he looked HUGE when he came out. ?I remember saying "thank GOD I had a c/s!"

  • DD was 8lbs 13oz, and I can tell you as the one who pushed her out - she was big.

Now my coworker just delivered (via c-section, thank goodness) an 11lb baby boy. Not a typo!

I'd say once you are hovering around 9lbs, it's big.

  • I think 9lbs+ is big.

  • I say DS was big. 9lbs 10 oz.

  • DS was 8 lbs., 10 1/2 ounces. I didn't birth him though, he was extracted from my body. :-(

I had no idea there was such a thing as fetal macrosomia.

  • my 9lb 5 oz baby was vaginal....pushed for an hour....not bad...like i said above, only one small tear.  I hope the next isn't that big!!!
  • from what I've read 7.5lbs is an "Average" baby so anything over 9lbs IMO is big.  DS was 8lbs and I felt it was perfect size.  I personally didn't want a small baby.
