If your DC has had an allergic reaction to a food...

Was it similar to this?

(Let me start by saying we already called the pedi and gave him benedryl per their instructions. The nurse wasn't totally sure if it was an allergic reaction though, so I thought I'd see what you ladies thought.)

We were feeding DS his dinner, which was enchiladas with a white sauce. There wasn't anything crazy in there, though we did use a new brand of salsa and there was sour cream mixed into the sauce. As we were feeding him he started gagging, and his eyes got really red and watery. We thought at first that he just got a piece stuck or something (though we do make them pretty small and he never usually has a problem), so we gave him a minute, offered him some water, and he stopped. Then we kept feeding him, and it started again. This time his eyes seemed really red, his eyelids started to swell a bit, and he looked like he was sweating, plus the gagging. At this point I was afraid it was possibly an allergic reaction so I called the pedi. While I was on the phone he vomited, DH said it looked like mucus or bile or something like that. He also started rubbing really hard at his eyes, like they were itchy.

He never seemed to have trouble breathing (or I would obviously have called 911 rather than the pedi), never broke out in a rash, nothing like that. He seems fine now. I thought he'd already had all the ingredients in the enchiladas, but it is possible that he'd never had sour cream. DH sometimes has a mild reaction to sour cream - he sweats under his eyes.

The nurse thought it might have just been that he choked or something went down the wrong tube when he was eating. I'm thinking it seemed more like an allergy and I am leaning towards the sour cream being the culprit. Anyone else's DC have a similar experience?

  • i would have 100% thought a pepper got in his throat/rubbed in his eyes. that doesn't sound allergic at all to me. but who knows.

I did not even think of that, but there were peppers in the salsa

  • yeah - aidan has had reactions like that when she had a pepper in queso. now she's used to it and likes spicy, but it was very "choke-like" when she first tasted it.
  • are you sure nothing got in his eyes? Though it could definitely be a reaction. Ethan has eczema or hive reactions to any dairy. but there are so many ways allergies manifest
