Refusing a glucose tolerance test?

Is it possible to refuse a glucose tolerance test?  I've already had this done twice a few years ago (both the short and LONG tests) because my doctor thought I might be diabetic.  I'm not, just chronic hypoglycemic.  I've learned to manage this though diet.  That "glucola" drink made me REALLY REALLY sick and I'm hoping to avoid this again.

Re: Refusing a glucose tolerance test?

  • were you pregnant at the time of those tests?

I would think that the risk of having untreated GD is greater than the annoyance of having to take the test.

  • Gestational diabetes is different than diabetes. Your test results a few years ago have nothing to do with what they would be now, while pregnant.

Personally, I would suck it up and take the test.

  • A test you took a few years ago isn't going to tell you if you've developed gestational diabetes during your pregnancy. I imagine you can refuse the test, but why would you want to take that risk? GD can be very serious if left undiagnosed and/or treated properly.

  • Don't refuse it. Just do it. As parents, we have to do things that make us want to puke all the time. Cleaning up poop on the floor. Cleaning up diarrhea. Think of this as your 1st "test"! LOL.
  • Do the test.  Your results from a few years ago have absolutely nothing to do with if you pass or fail it now.

GD is serious if left undiagnosed and untreated.  Everyone can get it, it doesn't matter if you're big, small, tall, short.

  • Refusing the test because the drink made you "sick" isn't worth the possible side effects to both you and your child if you develop GD (Which is completely different than typical diabetes, by the way)
  • I would rather feel_shitty from the drink than have GD go untreated. Welcome to motherhood.
  • Of course you can refuse it.  What are they going to do, strap you down and pour it down your throat?

That said, I can't believe you're asking this because you don't like the drink.  Are you going to refuse colonoscopies when you reach middle age because the prep makes you ill?  You can get GD regardless of your blood sugar issues before you were pregnant.  Put it on ice, suck it up (pun intended!) and take the test.

ETA: If it truly makes you violently ill, I've heard some doctors will let you just eat something very sweet (like pancakes with lots of syrup) beforehand instead of drinking the orange stuff.

  • I wouldn't.  It's to test for gestational diabetes, which you could not have had in a previous pregnancy, but can in this one.  My mom had three pregnancies without GD, but had it with her fourth baby.  You can ask your doctor about it, but I think feeling sick for a day or so would be fine with me over not knowing.

ETA: I just realized you didn't say if the previous glucose tests were from pregnancy or prior to pregnancy.  Gestational diabetes is VERY different from regular diabetes.

  • Yeah, I'm going to agree with all of the other previous posters and say that sacrifice your comfort for the sake of your sweet baby. Gestational Diabetes can have some very serious effects if untreated or treated in the proper way.

  • I think you can eat jelly beans instead. Talk to your Dr, but refusing the test because it makes you sick is silly. I puked after my test but I'd rather know than play with my child's health.

  • Ditto what everyone else says.

Just take the test but ask for alternatives to that drink.

    GL!

  • Wow, okay.  Wasn't looking for the insults or the belittlement . . . sorry I asked.
  • The worst possible side effect of uncontrolled gestational diabetes is stillbirth. ?Makes the drink seem like not such a big deal.??

  • See if you can go about refusing the whole labor thing too. And maybe even see if you can find away around those pesky night time feedings.

It's motherhood. Perhaps tolerating the drink and how it makes you feel is worth it to find out about GD, a serious issue.

You didn't get insults or belittlement. You got input (that you asked for) so just deal with it.

I, for one, agree that you shouldn't deny the test because it makes you uncomfortable. Suck it up.?

  • I was supposed to have it done at my next appointment, but when my doctor brought it up, I told him I would refuse it..... but this is only because I am a type 2 diabetic, already being treated by a high-risk ob, who put me on insulin.  So anything that the test would tell me, I already know!!!  And I am already on the recommended diabetic diet (have been for years) and taking insulin to control my sugars.

That being said, if I WASN'T already diagnosed and didn't know the deal, there is NO WAY I would refuse the test!  I think refusing it because it tastes bad is completely immature and ridiculous.  Someone else said it.... why don't you refuse a vaginal birth too because it will be painful.

  • Why would you refuse the test? GD can be very serious if you just let it go.  I will not put my baby at any risk, just bc i dont want to drink a sugary drink that might make me sick. Ask for options other than the drink, if thats the main reason your refusing it. Also as already said GD is alot different than regular diabetes.
  • Wow, lots of sarcasm and know-it-all-ness in some of these responses!  I'm currently expecting #3, and am not electing to complete a glucose tolerance test.  I have no risk factors, and baby's normal growth has been repeatedly verified by fundal measurements and ultrasound.  A false positive glucose tolerance test, which is very common, sends a woman down a path of further testing and being labeled "high risk" unnecessarily.  For those who think this test is necessary, great, it's available to you.  But belittling those who simply ask questions about it is rather nasty!
