Parenting after a Loss

Cold sweats?? (1 week postpartum)

I woke up literally shaking with teeth chattering last night.  bundled up and woke up drenched.  took a hot shower, back to bed and 2 hours later was drenched again.  after the 2nd shower feeling much better.  I took my temp a few times and it was 98.5.  Is this from my hormones crashing?

I honestly have no clue what to expect from my body postpartum as I have not seen my OB since 36 weeks so we never even got through the labor talk as dd came at 38w3d/4d.

Thanks.....

  • It's your body's way of getting rid of all the extra fluids you carried for 9 months.  I remember waking up drenched for at least 2 weeks PP... and then it went away.

  • That is not anything that I experienced, but I had a c-section so maybe that's different - I'd say to give your OB a quick call and see if they think it's normal or if you should go in to get checked out.

  • Has your milk come in yet? I know a lot of women experience something like this when their milk fully comes in.

Aside from that, I had horrible night sweats for a few weeks after birth. No chills or teeth chattering, but waking up really really hot and soaked. I hope you're feeling better now. ((hugs))

  • I had the same thing happen. I took my temp and it was fine, too. I still get sweaty at night and throw covers off and on.... It's getting better, though.
  • Totally normal, hormonal, as long as your fever stays normal.  I had the chills, but with a 103 fever two days after I got home with DS and I had to cart my butt right back to triage at the hospital and got a nice dose of antibiotics.  As long as you don't have that, its just your hormones readjusting to life without baby in the womb!

  • oh yeah. i was a sweaty mess for a couple weeks postpartum.

  • Yup, I had that big time.  I also had very swollen ankles (way worse than when I was pregnant).  My doc called it the 3rd stage of pregnancy.  It went away in about 2 weeks though.

this. i kept a zip up hoodie around for the first 2 weeks because i was constantly hot then cold. it goes away. :)

  • Yes, night sweats, hot flashes, swollen feet beyond anything during pregnancy. Those lovely hormones. But definitely keep checking your body temp, because if you have a fever it could indicate an infection.
  • Yup, same thing happened to me for a bit after birth.  I sweat all the time!!
  • Yup, it happened to me a few times but the worst was when my milk came in.  I've never been so cold that night and I didn't think I would make it.  Poor DH thought I was falling apart at the seams!!

  • Thanks all.  the triage nurse told me that it was hormonal (as long as I did not have a high temp).  My milk came in a couple days ago....but I am no longer engorged as of yesterday.  Hopefully it does not last that long!
