How do you make grilled cheese?

Do you make it in a pan?  Or do you put it in the over/toaster? Or do you have a sandwich press?

Do you just use cheese?  Which type of cheese?  Which type of bread?  Butter the bread?  Stick in a slice of tomato or other veggie?

Just curious my friend and I were having a discussion about this.  My personal favorite is ciabbatta with fresh mozzerella and sauteed mushrooms pressed in a pan until gooey and toasted.  But DD will pretty much eat anything with melted cheese.

Re: How do you make grilled cheese?

  • Grilled cheese is awesome no matter which way its done.  I've done it in all the ways you mentioned and with various different cheeses and breads.  you really can't go wrong!

  • in a pan - slice of butter melted, bread, american white cheese, squish with teapot, when golden brown more butter in pan repeat first half of process.  I am very plain and simple with my food lol.
  • I make mine with rye bread in a pan - I only put a little bit of butter on the bread and I usually just use American cheese.  Sometimes I'll put tomato or peppered ham in the sandwich.

  • I love grilled cheese. I usually make it in a pan on the stovetop. (I have done it on the George Foreman grill before) My favorite is wheat bread with munster cheese and a tomato. American cheese with a pickle is good too.

Thanks, DS and I are getting ready to go to the grocery store and I think I'll be making grilled cheeses for lunch! Big Smile

  • I never make grilled cheese at home because it always sticks to our pans and burns, and we don't use cooking spray. But my favorite is from this cafe that just closed :( It had a lot of gooey cheese - a couple of different kinds, not sure which - and some roasted tomatoes on sour dough bread.
  • For myself, I do it in a pan with butter, white bread and cheddar cheese. For Nick, I toast the bread in the toaster, then stick the sandwich in the microwave: whole wheat or multi-grain bread, cheddar cheese, no butter.
  • Oh, man, does that sound good.  I love mushrooms.  I like to make them with cheddar, but I've also made them with italian cheeses which is awesome.  I also like tomato slices.  Anything with toasty bread and cheese it good!

I use a skillet and either butter/butter substitute.

teapot, interesting choice.  I'm more a place coffee mug on sandwich, stir tomato soup, come back, flip it, replace mug, and carry on kind girl

I shall try the teapot method this weekend

  • For me or DH, in a pan on the stovetop.

For DS, I just put a slice of cheddar cheese between two slices of whole wheat bread and microwave it. ?It looks nasty to me, but he wouldn't eat it when I made it on the stove and LOVES it from the microwave. ?I think he likes the bread texture to be soft, because he won't eat toast, either.?

  • I either use mayo or butter, and I spread that on both sides of wheat bread.
I then put a piece of colby cheese and a piece of provolone on it, and place the sandwich in a frying pan that I pre-sprayed with a non-sticking spray.
Cook each side til golden brown.
***Sometime I put a slice of tomato on it or ham.?
    Mmmmmmmm!

make sure to cover the teapot bottom with aluminum foil so the cheese doesn't get on it Smile

  • when i'm out, i like to have tomoto on mine, but never seem to get it quite right at home.  this pub in my town makes a variety of grilled cheeses (toasted specials).  and one of their other sandwiches is the BEST veggie: spinach, onion, mushrooms, diced tomatoes and a ton of cheddar cheese on two ginormous pieces of sourdough, it's enough for two meals. SO delish.

why don't you use cooking spray? just curious.

i usually butter 2 slices of bread, slap some american cheese in the middle, and cook on the stovetop. i also love to add turkey or ham. ooh - also, this might sound gross - but my dad makes it on seedless rye, with velveeta, and greys poupon. it is delicious.

That sounds delicious, must try it!

And I am also trying the teapot method.

  • I butter two slices of whole grain white bread and use whatever cheese I have on-hand.  We have a local farm that makes their own cheese so I often try different varieties, like Green Olive Cheddar, Sundried Tomato Cheddar, etc.  I grill on the stove in a nonstick pan until golden brown and flip to grill the other side.

We usually just have cheese on it, but I recently discovered it is quite yummy with hummus on it, too.  Provolone with garlic & spinach hummus was delightful and DS loved it!

  • we keep it simple although all the ways sounds fabulous.

butter both sides of the bread, also butter the pan, stick two pieces of american or velveeta in between and grill. keep flipping till both sides are toasty goodness

  • In the oven with some salsa on it...yummmmmmm

  • For DS- regular whole wheat bread and white american cheese, cooked in a pan with a little butter. For me- any cheese (love them all!) on sourdough with tomato. I also like to use brie and thin apple slices.

  • English Muffin bread and velveeta is my favorite. Butter the bread and cook on the stove in a pan. But I'll also finish Adam's when made with Kraft Singles.

I do also love an English Muffin with ham and cheese, bundled up in aluminum foil and baked. That's a great memory of cold winter days from my childhood.

  • I use a small pan, butter what will be the outsides of each slice (of any ole bread, although your ciabatta sounds devine!!), and put a slice of cheese with a sprinkle of Adobo inside.
