Quick help: would you eat this or dump it?

Just opened a jar of spaghetti sauce from Trader Joe's and on the inside top rim of the glass jar is a weird, deep red/maroon ring... it's definitely not sauce... it almost looks like printing ink (my first panicked thought was blood, but wouldn't it have turned brown/discolored by now?!!  ewwww.)  It's hard to rub off of the jar (and off my finger where I touched it), and doesn't come off just rinsing it with water. Date on the jar is fine, as was the seal.

The problem:  I just dumped it into a pan of prepared ground beef, and have no other quick dinner options... gah.

Eat it or dump it?!

I'm leaning toward dumping it, but I hate to throw away perfectly good food just b/c I'm being a paranoid psycho...

Re: Quick help: would you eat this or dump it?

  • I would go under the assumption that it is actually the sauce staining the glass and eat it.  And then pray.  :)

  • I always dump if I'm in doubt. Is it just a line where the sauce tops off the jar?

  • It's at the top of the jar, so I was thinking/hoping at first that it was a "sauce stain"... but it's definitely a very weird texture, a different color red than the sauce, and I've used this sauce many times before and the jar always rinses clean...easily.  It was the sticky, hard to rub off my fingers (almost appeared to be staining them) part that freaked me out.

    Ugh.

  • Eat it.  It is weird, but I am hungry.
  • Yeah, I probably wouldn't eat it then.  I'm also a super paranoid freak about stuff like that, though, so take me with a grain of salt :)

  • I dump anything that looks weird.
  • It just sounds like it's sauce that maybe got separated a little from the rest of the sauce and dried at the top or something.  I don't know how it would separate, though...maybe if it got turned upside down and then righted again, and the residue dried at the top.

I'd still eat it.  At least you're putting it over heat. :)

  • I'm a wimp - I dumped it :(  Thanks for your help with this nonsense!
