2nd Trimester

is it true when you conceive determines sex of baby?

So I have heard a lot of truth to this, but wanted to see if it was true with the girls who know what they are having..

Is it true that if you conceive 3-5 days before ovulation you are having a girl and a day before or on the day of ovulation it's a boy?  This is true for our first, but don't know what our second will be yet!

Re: is it true when you conceive determines sex of baby?

  • No? Thats an OWT in my opinion, especially considering that the male's sperm determines the sex of the baby, not the females egg?

  • Well...your egg has nothing to do with the sex of the baby. Thats all up to whichever sperm gets to it first. So, I'm thinking its another of those OWT's. Although, I don't know what I'm having, or even when I ovulated, so if there is truth to it, I am in the dark :)

  • I wouldn't place bets on it but coincidentally it is true for me!!
  • Google "shettles method."  Officially, it is about 85% accurate for boys, about 65-75% for girls.

I was charting for both DS and DD, and with DS, we DTD on the day of ovulation, with DD, 2 days before. So it worked for us!

It's actually NOT an OWT, but neither is it 100% accurate each way. It's more reliable than intelligender though! :)   The theory is that the XX sperm swim slower but stay alive longer, and the XY(boy) sperm swim faster and die faster.

  • I think this is the Shettles Method. I don't think it is necessarily an accurate method though. I think the theory is that boy sperm swim faster, but that girl sperm last longer. Hence, if you have sex further away from O, you are more likely to have a girl, and closer to O, you are more likely to have a boy.

  • You cannot conceive before ovulation.  The egg has to be present for conception to occur.

The Shettles Method is about timing sex around ovulation to better the chances of having one sex over another:

There is some evidence the the XX sperm are slower but have more staying power so, if you have sex a couple of days before ovulation, chances are the XY sperm will die off while the XX sperm will perservere and fertilize the egg, resulting in a girl.  Conversely, XY sperm are supposed to be fast, strong swimmers so, having sex the day of ovulation supposedly increases the chances of having a boy.

  • It's not predictive of it, it just makes your odds of having a girl better since the female sperm is more hearty then the male sperm so it can survive longer in the uterus. If you conceive the day of ovulation you get a 50/50 shot, but if it's 3-5 days before your odds of having a girl are MUCH higher.

  • The theory is that the Y chromosomes (male) are faster, but die sooner.

The X (female) are slower, but live longer.

So, if you have sex a few days before you ovulate, then it's likely a girl...the boys don't live long enough to do the deed.

If you do it on the day you ovulate, it's likely a boy...he gets to the egg fastest.

That's the idea from the "Fertility Awareness Method" book.

  • Wow! You girls are fast!!
There weren't any responses yet when I was typing up mine!
  • thanks girls!  with the pregnancy now...it just so happened that we had sex 3-4 days before I ovulated....it is a completely different pregnancy from my first and all the gender charts said boy for my son and girl for this one - so we shall see!  it's just fun to guess!
  • This is essentially the shettles methodology.  While it has been used with some success whichever sperm gets to the egg and fertilizes it will be what determines the sex of the baby.  There also have been some studies that the egg is selective about the sperm that fertilizes it.  So saying the egg has no part in it isn't completely accurate.

  • I charted when I was ttc, and conceived 3 days before I ovulated and am having a boy.

  • Its not fool proof but likely.

However, we had sex the night before and the day of ovulation.  That would definiltey mean boy but nope, shes all girl.

You cannot conceive before you ovulate.  Conception occurs AFTER there is an egg.  I'm guessing you meant had sex three days before ovulation?

  • This wasn't true for me in either of my pregnancies.  We had sex three days before O both times and we have one boy and are expecting another.

  • The "Shettles Method" did not hold true in our case.

  • No. Every single one of those gender prediction charts (even supposedly the "real" Chinese gender prediction one) said I was going to have a girl.

    I am having a boy.
