Florida Babies

Have a question about Fort Myers

Hi ladies, I was hoping some of you could answer a question for me.  We are planning on taking a trip down to Fort Myers the end of July the beginning of August next year.  The baby will be 3-4 months old at the time.  We are staying at my aunt and uncle's house since they aren't there during the summer.

What kinds of things are there to do there?  I have been to FL just not this area.  We are also taking my stepdaughter who will be 10 at the time.  I know the house is really nice but that is all I know about any of it.  Are there any must see/ must do things there?  We will probably be stopping in orlando for a day so my stepdaughter can go to Disney World for the first time.

Re: Have a question about Fort Myers

  • I grew up in Marco Island which is just south of Ft. Myers.  Sorry to tell you but there is not a lot going on in that area.  I don't know what you are interested in doing.. but I would say the beaches are pretty, there are some decent restaurants in Naples which is nearby but I never really enjoyed Ft. Myers.  Can't think of any must see things to tell you about.  Maybe rent a boat and go see the area by water.  Have fun!

  • I grew up in Cape Coral (which is across the river from Ft. Myers) and still have family there.

Yeah, it's kinda lacking in a lot of "touristy attractions" - but a couple ideas are of course the beach - but specifically Sanibel and Captiva Islands, as they have a LOT of shells (if you're into shell collecting).  Ft. Myers has the Edison/Ford Estate, which is kinda interesting.  You can always find beach/water related activities (fishing, boating, parasailing, jet skis, etc.) by the water.  Cape Coral has a water park (Sun Splash is the name of it, I think).  Cape Coral also has an activity park (go-carts, paint ball, video games, etc.) on Pine Island Road - it's called Greenwells, I think.

  • There's the Imaginarium in Ft. Myers. Your stepdaughter might enjoy that. There's also a lot of mini-golf, bowling, etc. There are a few parks that are fun too. Lakes Park, Centennial Park, both in Ft. Myers. There's also a water park, SunSplash,  in Cape Coral, which is west of Ft. Myers, a 10 minute drive. Both your stepdaughter and son would enjoy it. There is a kiddie area, smaller slides for younger kids, a lazy river, etc. Hope that helps!

  • Fort Myers isn't as well endowed in the tourist industry as the rest of Florida, but there are some really neat things in the area to check out.

Calusa Planetarium would be fascinating to your ten year old. I'm sure she'd probably enjoy Ding Darling Animal Preserve out at Sanibel-Captiva.

In Naples there's Fun 'n' Sun which is a brand new Waterpark right next to a toddler-safe playground and in Cape Coral there's Sun Splash which is a much older (but fun) Waterpark.

In North Cape Coral there's Mike Greenwell's which is where you can play Putt Putt, Go Karts and a whole bunch of other things (in the 8 years I've lived here...I've never been there. lol!)

There's the Imaginarium in Downtown Fort Myers. Not to scare you or anything but the best time to visit is in the morning and early afternoon. The neighborhood isn't the greatest after about 5pm since it borders on Dunbar (the ghetto) and the Industrial Park.

If you take a trip down towards Everglades City you can take the family on an Air Boat. You can take your baby with you too, just ask the operator not to go too crazy (and man can they go crazy through those swamps!) because of the newborn. It can be quite educational for your 10 year old because the guides are experts in how the Everglades functions as an Ecosystem and you get a first hand look!

There's tons of beaches here but be sure to check the News-Press daily for the algae levels. Red Tide can get pretty bad down here. Oh and definitely go to Fort Myers Beach! On the weekends it's like a nonstop party! Family fun during the day and fun for the adults after dark.

There's also a zoo in Naples (about an hour south of here) called Carribbean Gardens. My daughter and I used to go every month (they have a promotion for residents to get in free on the first saturday) and she's loved it!

If you're up for it, I suggest going to Edison-Ford estates as well. Again, it's educational for the whole family but also outside of the estates are these old, huge banyan trees that are a natural playground for kids.

Feel free to shoot me a line if you have anymore questions about the area. I've lived here for 8 years but have been coming down to visit my Grandparents since I was baby and I'm 21 now so I'm very familiar with Southwest Florida as a whole.
