High-Risk Pregnancy

GD-Dinner numbers continue to be a little high. Recipe advice?

Hi!  I have been lurking on this board for about a week and have a question.  I was diagnosed with GD and failed the 3 hour tests by 5 and 10 points...did fine on the fasting number.

I've been checking my blood sugar levels and trying to eat within the range of exchanges my nutritionist gave to me.  Numbers have all been good, except for my dinner number.  I've been over several nights about 5-10 points.  I am not sure why.  I feel like I am balancing the protein and carbs.  I tried grapes with dinner one night and that was the first time I went over, so I haven't been eating any fruit with dinner.  Any good websites with recipe ideas?  I am finding dinner to be the hardest meal to plan.  I was hoping for more guidance from my nutrionist (like a specific meal plan) but all I got was bascially a list of foods and exchanges and how much I should have for each meal and snack.

Any advice you guys have would be great!

  • Hmm, can you tell us what you've been eating (besides grapes)? That might help pinpoint what you can change.

  • My typical dinners are:

Turkey burgers with low carb oroweat buns (15 carbs each bun), cheese, and a vegi side.

Salad with grilled chicken and whole wheat low carb toast (13 carbs for 2 slices).

Chicken tacos with corn tortillas (13 carbs each), and black beans.

Ground turkey with taco seasoning and corn tortilla tacos.

French toast on low carb wheat bread, sugar free syrup, and scrambled eggs.

    Chicken and vegis

Also I should note that I can only have 30 carbs for dinner. These all give me really good numbers so I rotate between these every week. GL!

  • I find that my best dinner numbers wise is grilled meat (steak, chicken, pork chop or fish), carb (brown rice or sweet potato- about 40 g worth is the best for me), and low carb veggies sauted in olive oil or steamed.  Kind of boring but if I get high numbers on more creative meals- I go back to this formula.

Sometimes, if I am craving something sweet, I will half the dinner carb and have a cup or half cup of low glycemic fruit like blueberries, raspberries or blackberries.

One thing that seems to shoot my morning numbers up are carrots.  Maybe watch to make sure you aren't including a high sugar veggie accidentally.

Also- I had an inexplicable high lunch number this week and the nurse called me.  She said that could happen if I ate too big a morning snack too close to lunch.  I would imagine the same could be true of dinner as well.

That's all I can think of!

  • not much advice, but here is what i've been eating..

Most nights i have a bocca burger w/ cheese (no bun) and veggies... the entire thing is about 15g of carbs and stock up on veggies b/c they are "free"

make sure you are haivng sensible snacks between each meal -if not, that can spike up your sugar levels when you actually eat.

    good luck

  • Thanks everyone!  I am not at all liking meat during pregnancy so it's been tough to come up with dinner ideas.  The first dinner I had that made my numbers too high was 2 low fat hot dogs on sugar free wheet buns, veggies and grapes.  The second dinner was Chicken with Mushroom sauce, 2 biscuits and a side of steamed potatoes and green beans (I think the potatoes or the 2nd biscuit was the problem here).  Last night I had a 1/4 portion of a Stouffer's lasagna and side salad.

My snacks have been cheese and crackers or the South Beach Bars so I am thinking that should be ok...

  • If you don't like meat.. try Bocca burgers! i live off of them!! (I'm a vegetarian)

i also eat "good dogs" w/ beans

if you eat fish... try having slamon or some other "low mercury" fish for dinner couple of times a week.

  • Be careful with potatoes- I can't eat them AT ALL... no matter how I make them (french fries, tater tots, baked potatoes, mashed potatoes). ?They ALWAYS make my numbers spike. ?Sweet potatoes are a different story though.

  • More veggies, eat them and your protein first. Not only do you get fuller on the less carb items, you will be processing the carbs better. This is my second time with gd and I have only had problems with fasting numbers when keeping to this formula. Also most of us have a real hard time with fruit.

I think you need to pay attention to what you are actually eating - I'd loosely count your 1st meal as 45+ grams and your 2nd as 45-75+ grams depending on your biscuits plus some for the cream sauce.

How are you counting? Looking at serving size and carboyhydrates on the container??

I agree - canned biscuits are 14 or 15g carbs for a regular biscuit, plus a half cup of potatoes put you well past your limit.

The lasagna wasn't enough protein to offset the carbs. A quarter serving would only be 4.5g protein - not even a single serving of protein and I'm guessing you need to eat at least 2 if not 3 servings with dinner?

To add to that, simple carbs hit your bloodstream faster - so that's likely what happened with the grapes as well as the carbs from white flour (hot dog buns, biscuits, white potatoes, pasta). Try whole wheat versions of those... and it might be that you can't just tolerate

Fat slows down carbs too, so I wouldn't go out of my way to eat low-fat.
