  I have a Pentax DSLR.  I used to shoot with a Pentax SLR in college.  I am no way a professional...just a hobbyist.

  I really like my Pentax.  The pluses include the price.  It's known brand-wise as kind of a workhorse camera.  Meaning you can abuse it and it isn't as fragile mechanically as some of the others can be.  Of course the lenses are still glass, so they are fragile.  But I haven't had any mechanical or electrical problems with the camera itself.
  
  The downside, there isn't as much support out there on the internet.  I found a local camera shop who taught a $35 1 hour class that was basically like a live version of the users manual.  This was invaluable to me because reading the users manuals on electronics is like reading hyrogliphics to me.  I go back to this shop with my questions (what lens to get, what speedlight) and they are very helpful.

  I have 2 other friends who shoot with Pentax's also (1 of my recommendation, the other came to the determination on their own) and we are all satisfied with them.

  That's pretty much what I was going to say.  I have my dad's SLR from '72 and it still works great.  I wish I could weigh on more specifically on their DSLRs, but I've never used one.
