...you knew that most people would mispronounce it, and there's really no other way to spell it so that they wouldn't mispronounce it?
I tried to make a click-poll out of this but it wouldn't work... Of course I ask because there's a name I'm absolutely in love with but I know most people wouldn't pronounce it correctly and that I (and my daughter) would always be correcting strangers.
Re: Would you still choose a baby name if...
No. Sounds like a total PITA to me.
I really liked a couple of names, but chose to give the names to my cats. That way I could still use them and I would never mispronounce them and the cats could care less if someone else did.

I absolutely would. The name is about you and your child, not about anyone else. My name is Kristin with an I, and I still get Christin, Christina, Christine, Kristen. It doesn't matter!
And, now with the internet shopping the way that it is, almost anything can be personalized no matter how crazy your name is!
What's the name?
If it's something like Caroline that's likely to get a combo of Caroline/Carolyn pronunciations, I wouldn't worry about it. But if it's something like Siobhan, which isn't pronounced how it looks, I don't think I'd do it.
Crap. That's what I was afraid of....
The name is Azure (as in sky blue) - pronounced Azscher NOT Azhoor. No flames please because I think Azure Elizabeth is beautiful. I just don't want people calling her Azhoor. This is a very rare name in the US, but one I've always liked.
I am the proud owner of a name that gets pronounced correctly, but NEVER spelled correctly - and it makes me crazy enough. I don't think I'd ever give my child a name that wouldn't be said right - he/she has to live with it forever.
Although I am curious what the name is . . .
Yeah, that's a toughie.

If you like it go for it. Both my maiden name and married name were/are always misspelled and pronounced. My first name and middle name can be either for a boy or a girl depending on spelling, and both are female spelling. So even people if people spell the first name right they often mistake me for a boy. It's not that big a deal for me, I have gotten used to it.
A great thing about it is I know if I'm getting soliciated as soon as I pick up the phone or get something in the mail.
this, exactly.
I was going to say no, but if we have a girl, we'll name her Amelie. And I'm sure it will be mispronounced a lot. So I guess I would, but it would have to depend on the name
According to Merriam-Webster it is not pronounced the way you want it if I am following your phonetic spelling. (Click on link for audio pronounciation).

They said it the way I would have. I think most will say it that way.
Honestly, only name your child Azure if you can handle gracefully her name being said 'wrong' all the time. I work for an airline and it is insane how many mothers get snappy and rude when you say their child's name 'wrong'. I feel if you pick a you-nique pronounciation, you need to be gracious about people saying it wrong. It is not their fault they can't guess what alternate pronounciation you want. It is one thing to correct your child's teacher since she will have daily contact. It is another to get snappy about how it is said to every person.
(I am also amazed by the number of adults who get snappy when you say their uniquely pronouned name 'wrong').
I never realized Azure was pronounced that way... I went to art school and have probably run into that word more than most people, but I always said Azhoor.
I actually think that a correct spelling and harder to pronounce name is better than an easily pronounced name with a crazy spelling. Most people will learn your child's name by hearing it - "Hi, I'm Azure" and only later have to spell it.
Everyone always asks me if my name is spelled correctly, so I know how it feels for people to mispronounce and misspell my name. I still love it and wouldn't have it any other way.
It's Jhoanna and the h is silent.
I LOVE the name. I have had to correct my name spelling and all, and my last names spelling, maiden and married. You get used to it.
My name is Rachelle...I get Rachel (A LOT!), Raquel, Rochelle, it goes on an on. And I usually have to spell it too. Again, I got use to it. I used to be so so about it and now I love it. I don't care if I have to correct people.
This is EXACTLY how I would pronounce it and how Azure is pronounced - sorry, I guess my attempt at phoenetic spelling wasn't very good! Anyway, some people know the word is pronounced this way and some people think it is Azhoor. Thanks for sharing this though. Now people can listen to it to know what is correct and not my sad excuse for phoenetic spelling!
can't you spell it like: asher? or like you said Azscher. Even though it will have different meaning?
I was all in the "absolutely not" camp, until I saw your name. I think that's a beatiful name. I'm torn. I probably still wouldn't because she's going to have to be correcting people constantly in new situations like a conference or at summer camp, first day of school. The people she knows will get it, though, and in the end its up to you.
At least Azure is a word in the English language. If people pronounce it wrong, it's due to their ignorance.
I say go for it! Sometimes even the simplest names get mispronounced. My brother's name is Elias and people call him Ah-lias instead of E-lias. It happens all the time. People always mispronounce our last name. People always misspell my first name (name is Melinda but they always write Malinda....probably because they mispronouce it causing them to misspell it).
I'm not a fan of made up names - but I think Azure Elizabeth is unique and beautiful. If my baby is a girl we're naming her Arianna (pronounced Ah-dee-ah-nah) - and I know people will have a hard time saying it correctly - but that's the name we love and that's what we're using.
