1st Trimester

Anyone pregnant and rock climbing?

Think it's still OK as long as my harness still fits?  I only top rope, and pretty much only in the gym these days.  I'm a bit reluctant to ask my doctor because, unless she's actually familiar with rock climbing, I think she might just assume it's too dangerous and tell me not to.  Any advice?

Re: Anyone pregnant and rock climbing?

  • I would think in your first tri when you don't have a belly yet that it would be ok.  I would only do gym though just because outside is much more unpredictable.  I have never asked my dr this because I haven't been climbing in a couple of yrs.  My dr let me ski and I would think indoor rock climbing is safer than skiing.

  • Thanks, auslyn, good point!  WAY bigger risk of falling when skiing than when climbing.

  • I have zero knowledge of this. I just want to say I hate you for having the energy to even CONSIDER rock climbing. LOL.

  • LOL!  Sorry, Erin.  I definitely have a lot LESS energy, but I'm still dragging myself onto the wall.  It's really the only weight/resistance style workout that I can get myself to do, so I don't want to lose it (yet, anyway).  DH and I haven't told anyone we're PG yet, so I'm having to make excuses to my climbing partner as to why I'm so slow!  I definitely don't have the stamina, but when someone's counting on me to show up, I'm still dragging myself there!  I hope you feel better soon!!!

  • The title of this post made me laugh!  I rock climbed once, and I wouldn't do it even if I wasn't pregnant and you paid me! LOL

To each her own...  I would imagine that if you're harnessed in, have the energy, and it is something you have done previously and your body is used to it, it wouldn't be an issue.  Have fun!

  • I went climbing during 1st tri last pregnancy; I'm no doctor but I don't know why it would be a problem unless your rope broke or you pushed out really hard and hit face first into the wall (and yes, I realize those scenarios are virtually guaranteed not to happen).  Just be careful of your stamina and also of your coordination (clumsiness is actually a symptom of pregnancy).  Generally exercise that you have been doing can be continued, so I'd say climb away!
  • I climbed all the way until ~halfway through 2nd tri.  Could probably have continued, just didn't have folks to climb with.  Good luck!
  • My midwife okayed it for me, even though I get dizzy so I doubt I'll go out but we were thinking about taking a trip so I wanted to know if I could.
  • It's fine.  Once you have a belly, you can get a body harness that will accomodate it (some gyms will have some you can borrow).

I only climbed with people I wa super-comfortable with as partners when I was pregnant as well.
