High-Risk Pregnancy

"underweight" with GD?

Hi Everyone,

Last week I went in for my 1 hour glucose test and the Dr. called me back saying I did not pass and my blood sugar was 148 (max was 140). He wanted me to go in for the 3 hour test.

Yesterday I went in for the 3 hour test. My fasting before drinking the glucose drink was 77.

One hour after drinking- 205, Two hours: 213, 3rd hour: 168.

I have always been very petite, about 5'1" and a size 2 pre-pregnancy. So far I have only gained 15 pounds this pregnancy, I always have low blood pressure (80/60 on average), and no history of type 1 or type 2 in my side of the family.

Anyone else have GD who does not fit the "norm" for diagnosis?? Also, my DH is type 1 could this be a factor (genetically) and is my child at a higher risk of developing diabetes in her life?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

  • You may not have some of the risk factors but it can happen to anyone since it is a hormonal reaction.  Sorry you have to deal with it.  I don't have any family history and had only gained about 15 lbs.  I did start out a little overweight but not a lot.

I have read that the baby can be at a higher risk for developing diabetes later in life.  I asked the nurse at the diabetes center this the first day I went and she said that this risk was reduced if the mother recieved proper treatment and was in good control.  I'll be curious if others have answers to this one.

I don't fit any of the criteria either, being a size 4 pre-pregnancy and only gaining 15lbs, baby measuring normal in size, no diabetes in the family, no reason to believe otherwise. I think the test was skewed - I was sick with a cold, stressed about the darn woman not being able to find veins and almost crying because she kept pricking me (I have a big swollen bruise on both arms today), and had an emotional conversation with my DF after the 1st hour (stress is known to affect insulin levels). So there you go.

Here's some reading that'll get your blood boiling, as it did mine (which I was reading in the waiting room - probably raised my levels too!), about the whole GD "thing".

  • There is no "typical" for GD.  It's not based on your pre-pregnancy weight, how much weight you gain, etc.

That being said, I was normal weight and at 32 weeks have on gained 12 lbs total.  My baby is normal on the growth curve.

  • GD does not mean you are overweight! It is not like normal diabetes. In pregnancy it is related to the hormones in the placenta and how your body is dealing with it.

  • Umm I think none of us fit the bill for getting GD. There is no such thing. I was very active and a healthy eater pp, and I still got it.
  • There is no weight factor and it is pretty insulting that you are implying that there is one. Perhaps you should research GD before deciding what is "normal" for getting it.
  • I never gained an ounce with any of my pregnancies, threw up the entire time, and still developed GD with my 2nd.  Just my 2nd though.  I actually passed the 1hr with my 3rd.

You just never know when it'll hit you.

As for BP....my BP was at its worst with DD3 and that's the one I passed the 1hr with, so your BP has nothing to do with it either.

I guess you might be at risk for getting it with future pregnancies.  In my case, it was just that 1 pregnancy, so there was something going on there beyond anyone's control.

    ^^This exactly.

  • I was 93 lbs (4'10'') pre-pregnancy.  My BP was low pre-pregnancy as well.  My OB and peri were adamant that I gain a MINIMUM of 35 lbs in my twin pregnancy.  At 28 weeks, they were getting quite concerned that I wasn't gaining enough weight fast enough.  Lo and behold, that same week, I failed my 1 hour GTT and then failed my 3 hour GTT.  Having GD made it really interesting trying to gain the rest of the weight without making my sugars bad!

After 20 months TTC with PCOS, we were blessed with twins!
They arrived at 36 weeks after PTL and bedrest for 14 weeks. Lilypie Third Birthday tickers image
