Pajamas or Night Gown at the hospital?

I saw a post earlier about what some of us are wearing after birth.  Isn't it easier to wear a night gown at the hospital?  I'm just imagining that they'll be checking down there pretty often.

BTW  I'm much more comfortable in pjs.

  • I am going with a night Gown being better, but only if you have a vaginal birth.  I believe if you have a c-section it doesn't matter.

  • They are gonna be checking you, yet when I have family coming I wanna be as comfy as possible and for me that's in pants.

  • Yeah, don't bother with pj's or real clothes. Just wear the hospital gown, or your own nightgown if you must. You will be checked every 2 minutes 24 hrs a day, your belly and down there. Also if you're breast feeding you can just unsnap the shoulders of the hospital gown, much easier and quicker for the bazillion times you'll need to access that area too.

Personally the last thing on my mind was what I was wearing.

  • It's not a big deal for them to check you and you wear pants.. I would feel funny in a night gown, lol.. I don't think I've worn one since I was like 10, haha :)?

    ITA!

  • With my first two I wore nightgowns.  This time around I'm bringing a nightgown as well as a cami/capri jammy set- and a robe that matches both.  I always chose nightgowns because of the checking but you really aren't checked that often as long as everything is routine.

I would say Night gown would be easier not matter how you deliver.  You will still be checked down under if you have a c-section, you will still be bleeding.

  • I bought 2 gowns with robes yesterday from motherhood. I think that it will be easier in the hospital with gowns.
  • The entire time Iw as in the hospital with both DS's, I just wore the hospital nightgown. It never even occured to me to wear pj's but thats because I never thought I would bne "allowed" to. (silly, I know).

I think I will just stick with the hospital gown and maybe bring a pair of pj's.

  • why has this become such a popular question?!
  • I hate robes, so I bought a cheapo nightgown from Target that I don't mind trashing. I'll also bring some old sweats for after the birth.
  • I wore pants after my c/s just more comfy.  At night I think I did a gown because I could feed easier.  It doesn't really matter as pp said they can check you with pants on, they are just looking at your pad to see how much blood loss you have had.
  • My advice - wear the hosp gown.  Seriously...anything else you bring will get ruined and you will have PLENTY of days once you are home to wear your comfy lounge clothes.  To be more direct, the amount of bleeding afterwards was crazy, and I am so glad that I didn't wear my own underwear, robe, or pants.  I did wear a built in bra tank top underneath (felt like I needed something to hold in the jiggly belly).
  • Honestly I do not remember being checked that often after DD's birth.  I wore pants and they would just pull them down a little no big deal.  I am much more comfortable in pj's.  I would do the pjs if I were you.  If your not gonna be comfortable what is the point of bringing anything?

    pants for me.

  • When my first son was born I wore a nightgown and loved it, then basically stayed in one for the first month of his life.  Most of the time I am a PJ pants and tank kinda gal!

  • Last time I took a gown. I put in on for an hour or two... and then I put the hospital gown back on. I had a c/s.

It was easier to nurse in the hospital gown.

My own nightgown got caught under my butt, so to get the gown up far enough I had to lift my hips. Imagine you got beat up after doing a super-heavy ab workout at the gym. Now make that feeling 10x worse and do hip lifts. Yeah, not fun. Pants would be even worse.

Now if you have an easy vaginal birth, then maybe either would work fine. Otherwise you're not going to care.

Oh, and with a c/s they check your incision as well as your vaginal bleeding (yup, a little c/s bonus, you still get the pp bleeding/lochia PLUS get your gut slit open. such fun.)

  • I wore pants and a shirt last time and will do the same this time.  It sounds like each hospital is different and each person is different.  At my hospital, they only check my incision (c-section) and never once checked my vaginal area.  And they only check the incision and handful of times (maybe once a shift).  I also did not bleed that much and never ruined anything - not even a pair of undies.

  • I might just do a nursing tank and those hospital undies after delivery. I didn't get out of bed much with DD and can easily put on a robe to go to the bathroom.
  • Barring a huge growth spurt in the next 8 weeks, I plan on using my own cheapy nightgowns.

I'm a small person and I have yet to ever find a hospital gown that doesn't fall off of me.  I think I would be more comfortable in a nightgown that I know fit.
