how are you narrowing down your list of names/name ideas? (Aside from simply not liking particular names).
For example, ours:
- has to be more than 1 syllable (last name is 1 syllable)
- can't be a color (last name could be a color)
- has to be feminine (our last name could be a first name)
- and originally I didn't want something popular, but I think I might end up breaking this "rule"
- lastly, I am googling name choices and being careful about initials
Re: How do you rule out baby names?
The middle name is always a variation of a family member's name. For example our youngest daughter's middle name is Lynn after DH's mother whose name is Lindee.
For first names we just go through the baby book, name-by-name, and write down which ones we really like. The meaning has a lot of significance to us.
Then we rule them out. We test them out with the middle name, pretend we're yelling the name, make sure the initials aren't something bad, etc.
-has to be more than one syllable (last name is monosyllabic)?
-can't start with a B (last name does)?
-can't be trendy
-can't be a color or plant of any type (last name is bush)
-can't be anything that sounds dirty with bush
We are also taking initials into consideration ?
I spent weeks making a list of names that I just liked for both boy and girl. I threw some out at him and his favorite for boy and girl were my favorites too and that was that. It would have been Cole James for a boy and Madison Alessandra for a girl. James is the first name of both of our fathers and Alessandra is my middle name and also my Aunt's first name and Great Grandmother's first name. Neither Cole or Madison have any family meaning.
