I'm not sure what to make of this whole swine flu thing. I spoke with our visiting nurse who usually has great perspective. But this time she told me to not have DD get it because the vaccine is just a way for all these companies to make money and that it's really not going to be as bad as they say it is...yadda yadda.
And, I know her pedi will want her to get it...just because pedi's want all their patient's to get vaccinated against everything...
Even though DD has gotten the flu shot the last two years, she ends up getting it anyway so is it a waste? But on the other hand, I'll have a newborn at home, so that makes me think I should vaccinate.
So I'm stuck. What is everyone doing? Particularly those with fragile immune systems.
Re: Anyone thinking about Swine flu vaccine?
I will definitely have Marley get the regular flu shot, as we did last year. I will also probably have her get the H1N1 flu shot too.
When Marley has fevers Marley gets seizures. Bad ones. Ones where she stops breathing. It is the worse thing I have ever experienced. She is on Keppra now but it may not prevent a seizure when she develops a fever.
I don't want to take the chances. I believe seizures and not breathing are more of a risk than are side effects to the flu vaxs.
Drake is more likely to get anything going around because of his trach so I am definitely pro flu shots! I am planning to talk to the pedi next week about a schedule for him and the rest of the family will be going to the health foundation (no insurance right now) to get ours when it is available. My daughter is in high school and I work so germs are usually in abundance around here.
We will also be taking extra precautions (hibernating, in a sense) for most of flu and RSV season. Drake's respiratory system is too open to take any chances.
They do warn you that you may still get the flu after a flu shot but it could be less severe. Trust your gut and do what you think is right for your LO.
Here's to a happy and healthy Fall/Winter/Spring for everyone!
I am planning to wait until the end of Oct. when it becomes available, and evaluate how bad the flu season is so far. I assume by that point we will have an idea how close or far the estimates are from reality.
If it looks like a farily mild season, and DS is still at home with DH (laid off right now) we will skip it. If DS is back in daycare and the season looks moderate to severe, we will probably vacinate.
