How to Best Search for a Daycare?

Since I'm completely new to the daycare world, does anyone have any good advice on how to begin the search? ?Any site recommendations, search sites, places to look up reviews and what other parents think? ?Most of my friends and coworkers don't have kids, so there are not many people I can ask advice from.

Looking in Plymouth, Livonia, south/west farmington area if anyone has any recommendations (home is in Plymouth and work is in Farmington).?

Re: How to Best Search for a Daycare?

  • You can search for state licensed centers here: https://www.dleg.state.mi.us/brs_cdc/sr_lfl.asp

After we decided we wanted a center over an in-home setting, I used the state's site to look at licensing and other reports. I asked on the Detroit Nest board too (since there was more action on there than here at the time). The Freep/Detroit News also has a moms-to-moms Web site (https://detroit.momslikeme.com) with a discussion board.

I just narrowed by location, availability and then made some visits.

    Good luck.

  • My sister's 3 yr old boy goes here:

to the Livonia North Center.  She really like them. DH picked up the nephew once there and he really liked them too and if DD wasn't already going to a place that we love, we would consider them.

DD goes to this center in Canton:

  • I have been looking at daycares .. I think the best way to go is actually go to a bunch of places and see how they interact with the babies.. some places you get that warm feeling like they actually want to be with the children and other places.. you will realize it is just a job for them!
  • I looked online, posted on chat boards, etc. to get recommendations. Then, I went to several places to see what they were like, how they interacted with the kids. I took my MIL with me. I trust her opinion. She is a retired elem school principal so her observations were really helpful.

One of the places we looked at and liked is a Kindercare on 10 Mile in Farmington Hills. I know it is West of Haggerty but I forgot what other large street is it is near. I don't know that area very well. It was a mid-point between DH's and my work, but we decided to go with a different place closer to home.

Good luck in your search. Not that I would recommend this approach to anyone, but I didn't actually find a daycare until after DD was born. I guess I'm just saying, it can be stressful, but sometimes everything just works out in the end. I have never second guessed our choice in daycare.

  • I think you said you work in Farmington, and this place is in downtown Farmington. This is where my DD goes. She's been going there since she was 12weeks old. I LOVE them. They are not the cheapest, but they are wonderful.  Sunny Day Care. Tell them Allie's mom sent you. :)
