BFP's and still POAS? WHY?

Why do people keep taking tests AFTER they already have a BFP? I read that all the time on these boards, and I've never understood it.

(Granted something about a negative test makes me want to keep on testing, even though I know I need to wait another day or two, so I am aware that is also stupid... :)

How many times after your BFP did you still POAS? Be honest! :)

Re: BFP's and still POAS? WHY?

  • The first test I took was one of those two-lines tests (not sure what they're called!). I was sure I was seeing things - couldn't believe there were 2 lines!!!! I took a digital the next day to confirm.

  • I agree- I think it is a little weird- esp. for second time moms???  I took one test- it was negative, tested a week later, it was positive and that was it for me!  Never tested again.
  • With DS after I got my BFP I took 2 more test. One to makes sure I got another positive and the second because MIL gave me a 10 and told me to go do it again.

  • I think it's just fun for some people to keep getting positive tests!

Also, some people think that if the test keeps coming up positive, then everything must be fine and they won't have a miscarriage.  I read that on 1st tri a couple of weeks ago.  Of course, that is completely untrue.

  • Zero!!

I still have a test underneath my sink in the bathroom since they come in a 2 pack.  I waited to POAS until I was like 6 days late for my period.  i just kept thinking oh my period must be coming soon.  so my second line started showing up immediately.  I never had any reason to doubt it or test again.  I don't really get this either.  The only reason I would is if it was faint and I wasn't sure.

  • I took several but I couldn't tell if it was an evaporation line or a real line. It was pretty faint. I think also I was just so surprised and thought I must be seeing something that wasn't there.
  • After having a m/c, I needed to POAS to make sure I was "still" pregnant. When I got pregnant again this summer, repeated POAS helped me find my m/c before I started bleeding. It makes sense to a lot of us who have suffered a loss (or two). Maybe you understand now?

It doesn't mean you won't have a m/c, but if you get 3 positive tests and a few days later get nothing but BFN's, you can guess what's coming next.

  • With Joseph, I took the two I had in the house the first day. I'd been testing so long and hadn't seen the second line ever, not even an evap line, I wanted to make sure it wasn't a fluke.

And then because my husband is a techno geek, he wanted me to try the digitals, and I was all for it because I was still kind of disbelieving. So I did the two pack of those, too.

I think that people also often have to wait a few weeks to get into the doctor, and if the only diagnostic tool you have is a pee stick, it feels like you're doing the only thing available to you.

  • I bought a 2-pack and used them both. Waste not, want not. :)

  • With DD I am pretty sure I took 8 hpt tests total... all positive.  I m/c my 1st pg and somehow seeing all the positives made me feel better... which I know is stupid since I didn't m/c my 1st pg till I was 12 wks and my hcg was still sky high and very much positive but somehow the 2nd time around the hpts made me feel better.

  • I bought 2 different digital tests and I took one at 5 PM the day after my period was due, and I took the other one the following morning.  That was it.
  • With DS I took 3 lol

one was very faint so I retested, 2nd was slighter darker and last was digital

two months ago AF was late so I POAS positive YAY was as happy as can be (digital) POAS the following day just because I couldn't believe it and it was BFN -- I was devastated -- took 2 more and all BFN.

  • twice with this one because the line was so faint and didn't show up right away.  With ds the second line was already forming before I put the cap on the test.

That's true.  But I would guess that means that "what's coming next" is blood, so you would have known soon anyway.  I had a missed miscarriage.  Never started bleeding so I went ahead with a D&C.  I could have taken 208987897 tests and they would have all been positive because my hCG was really, really high... but it was all for a failed pregnancy.

  • honestly... 6. i just couldn't believe it was true!

  • I took 2 tests. The first official BFP in the morning and then another that afternoon to confirm.

You're right. I'm sorry about your loss. We were both speaking from our personal experiences. :)

  • I'm a POASaholic. If there were any in the house I'd pee on them now.

I took 3 tests: 1st =superfaintcouldbepositive, 2nd = BFP and then I had to "burn through" the last one so it wasn't sad & unused.
