What do I really need to pack for the hospital?

And- what is up with nursing bras? Everyone keeps telling me to go ahead and get a bag together, just in case, and the fact that I probably won't feel like it later. I know I need some PJs and everyday toiletries, anything else? I also went looking for nursing bras today and have no idea what I'm getting into. I've been told to get a few "sleep bras", but they seem to have no support whatsoever, so what's the point? Also, what if my boobs grow after my milk comes in? What have you ladies done about this??

  • My recommendation: Buy nursing tanks instead of bras since you won't know what your cup size will be right away.  Try the Bravdo Nursing tanks.  They are awesome!

You can't wear an underwire for a while since they will cause breast infections, so don't worry about that right off.

Try this bra for starters: https://breakoutbras.stores.yahoo.net/bosisenubrab.html

It's stretchy, so it will expand for your boobs if they get drastically larger.

  • Awesome. I did buy 2 nursing tanks today. I wear tanks all the time anyway ?and figured that would be most comfortable around the house the first few weeks.?
  • If I can make one suggestion, bring an extra empty bag, like one of those big canvas grocery bags or two of them. You may be taking home extra stuff and will need something to put them in. Take extra "perineal pads" (like long ice packs) from your hospital room - they work great if you ever have a backache or need an ice pack. Also take home the extra bed bads (I forget what they're called) - they work great later on as disposable changing pads for your baby.

As far as nursing bras, I would also suggest just getting a tank or a soft-cup one that's at least one cup size larger than what you are now. Underwires won't cause a breast infection if they are fitted properly, but you may not like wearing them for a while.

I would get a bag ready just as you would for a vacation for 2 days, but keep in mind that you won't want to (or be able to) carry all that crap into the hospital or back out again along with a newborn. You can always send your DH back to the house to get something if you forget it - it's not like you're vacationing in a foreign country.

I would NOT buy nursing bras until your milk comes in. Nursing tanks are great.  Just buy some of them.

Chapstick is a must, hair ties, toiletries, big grannie panties.  Comfy loose clothing.  I am just going to wear there gowns I bleed so much with DD that I ruined some of my clothes at the hosptial.  So I am basically just bringing going home clothes.

I agree. Also if you're planning on nursing and bring your own gowns, make sure they have easy access like buttons down the front. Oh and dont forget the baby's going home clothes.

  • I'm packing going home clothes and toiletries, my camera with extra batteries, contacts/glasses, makeup. That's about it. The carseat will already be in the car.

I wear sports bras to bed right now. I haven't even thought about nursing bras yet. I probably won't until after she's born.

  • In my bag,.....

Robe and nursing gown, socks, large boy shorts, Lounge pants, nursing tank, nursing bra, tooth paste, travel size of shampoo conditioner and body wash, 2 outfits for baby- newborn and 3 months, receiving blanket, har brush, makeup, maxi pads camera, video camera.

  • Thanks ladies.  This helps me out too with some things I might have missed with my first packing list.  :)
  • I've been wearing a sports/yoga bra since like 10 weeks. ?I just pull it up to pump.. Lot more comfy than wearing a 'real' bra. ?

Bring slippers and granny panties. ?I HATED the mesh panties.. they had two different kinds and they both sucked. ?I was so happy I had some grannies. ?I almost slipped a few times in the socks they gave me, so my slippers were awesome. ?

I second the extra bag. ?Bring any electronics chargers and try to label them.. so if you switch rooms or something, they will eventually find you again. ?

Also, one of the nurses suggested having DH get me a bellyband to hold the monitors in place instead of those annoying elastic bands. ?Might want to bring one and see if they'll let you use it. ??
