BFing moms with a toddler, question...

What do you do with your active toddler while you are feeding the baby? My DS nurses for what feels like an hour sometimes and my daughter (2) gets impatient which I understand. Just looking for how you manage two.

Re: BFing moms with a toddler, question...

  • DS#1 was 3 when DS#2 was born. He was content to play or just talk with me while I nursed as long as I was in the same room. When I needed to nurse the baby to sleep, I'd let DS#1 play quietly with his cars right outside the nursery door, and that typically worked.

  • DD#1 was 18 months when DD#2 was born and what I would do was get tons of books, sit down on the floor and nurse DD#2, and read stories to DD#1.

DD#1 was 3, and DD#2 was 19 months when DS was born. I would do the same thing this time, but I also let them play together nicely while I nursed.

  • Plan something for her to do only when you are nursing, if you have a little einsteins dvd, or like pp said get "special" books/coloring books for that time and have her draw you pics to hang on the fridge. There are leapfrog learning activity boards, that are made for a variety of ages and are easy for independent play(as well as together). But they are worth it, my DS#1 is 6 now and still uses some of the stuff he got at 3 and 4.

  • DD1 was 18-ish months old when DD2 was born.  I'm not gonna lie--I used the TV a lot for when I was nursing.  At that point, it kept her occupied and it was treated as "special" so I think she felt content watching the TV.  I'm not sure how things will go this time around with a 2.5+ and 14 month old... hopefully they'll be playing nicely together or something... but I can see myself resorting back to the TV.  I don't see anything wrong with it, especially in moderation.  Some people think the TV's the devil.  My daughter learned the alphabet from watching about 10 episodes of Super Why, at a much quicker pace than I think she would have if I was teaching her.  That is part of the reason I don't mind the TV.  Good luck.

  • I usually read books to the other boys while I nursed the baby. Or you could have a special basket of toys that she only gets to play with while you nurse or have a few special toys that you rotate out (if you have 10 small toys, every 10th time you nurse she'll get that toy...so it always stays exciting). There's always tv, snack, play doh, let them play in the tub while you nurse (yes, while sitting on the toilet lid...it's amazing the places you squeeze in nursing with your 2nd, 3rd kids).
