3rd Trimester

I always wake up on my back!

I'm trying super hard to stay on my side but I wake up right on my back in the mornings. My body apparently finds this more comfortable. I have no idea how long I stay on my back, is there any harm to the baby if it's hours and hours?

Re: I always wake up on my back!

  • Sleep however you can. Its honestly pointless to worry about staying on your left side just because the books tell you its right when there are plenty of other things to focus on. I pretty much only sleep on my back. We are both fine.

Way to many do's and dont's going around that just annoy me.

  • I sleep on my back a lot too. My dr. told me it wasn't a big deal and sleeping how I'm comfortable was more important than anything.

He said I'd wake myself up before anything serious could happen.

    Ditto this from my doc

  • I still do as well.  Your body will let you know (you'll wake up feeling light-headed or unable to breathe well) when it's time to stop.

  • I still sleep on my back sometimes too. Heck at this point if I can stay asleep longer than two hours I will take it!
  • I start on my side and always end up on my back too.  If you are worried about it, try to put a pillow on your side, but under your back a little so you aren't laying completely flat.
  • my MW said you'd wake up if it was a problem but added to put a wedge pillow under one of my hips so I wasn't completely flat and that should make me even more comfortable and it has helped.
  • You're fine!  You may be waking up because you need to move.  Just reposition and go back to sleep.  Don't worry about it, you are trying to do the right thing and you can't control what happens after you fall asleep!

This is what I do :)  I love my wedge and pregnancy pillow that I prop undermyself and I can sleep 9 hours a night and only wake up a few times to use the restroom.

  • I think it's damage to you, not the baby, that we worry about - something about compressing blood flow (or a nerve or an organ, or something). And I think you'd notice if it were a problem. You might just not be big enough yet - I can't be on my back more than a minute without being dizzy and out of breath, but that didn't happen till a month or two ago (now that I'm truly huge). Sleep NOW, while you can, however you can! I can't believe the difference a couple weeks makes toward the end - now, if I start on my side I stay on my side merely because I am unable to move at all!

  • I wake up on my back almost every night...  When I wake up I just flip to my side and don't worry about it.
  • Thanks girls, I think I'm going to try the pillow trick so that I'm not completely flat.

  • I wake up on my back too.  I feel fine, so I don't know what the deal is.

I'm not going to worry about it since I've made it this far without an issue!
