I am 28 weeks pregnant and need to decide in a couple of weeks to do this. We have the money in savings but need to get another car and I have been out of work so I will go looking again in Jan. LO is due in November. It is just expensive and the chances of needing it are low. how many of you opted out of it even though you had the money. Were there other reasons for not doing it?
Re: Cord blood storage
here's a good article about donating.
https://www.aap.org/advocacy/releases/jan07cordblood.htm
we donated Griffin's... we couldn't donate the twins b/c they don't take it from twins (they can't get enough for the cost of collecting)
find out if your doc does donation collections- not all do, some charge for it.
we didn't bank private b/c we don't have any treatable diseases in our family, and the chances of needing it are so small and costs so high. If everyone donated there would be more matches for people (ie- how we don't bank our own blood- there is enough public blood)
We also were at a hospital where donation was not possible, and even though it was tight (I can always come up with other options for $2500), DH felt strongly about it. He had an employee whose 3/4yo son was diagnosed with cancer - 6 months after being in the hospital for an "infection" (I still think that they failed to complete all the tests, stopping when they got a single possible answer). He needed all sorts of blood donations, tests, procedures, etc. It scared DH. He decided that whatever needed to be done, our child(ren) would have every chance no matter how small the risk.
So, we banked the 1st kid's and won't be banking #2 (it can be used for siblings). Still wish I could donate this one though.
