Babies: 0 - 3 Months

my son doesn't sleep...AT ALL

i've been told by everyone under the sun that newborns sleep 16-18 hours a day...well, except mine! During the day, he sleeps TOPS 45 minutes to an hour. At nite, on a  GOOD nite, he'll sleep for 3-4 hours...1 hour at a time, spaced out by 2 hour feeding sessions.  This has been happening since we brought him home, so i unless he is going through a 3 week growth spurt, WTF is going on?

 MH and I need a nap...i'll be thrilled with a 2 hour stretch!! :(

Re: my son doesn't sleep...AT ALL

  • Are you breastfeeding?  If so, that's pretty typical.  He's getting your supply to increase.  If you're worried, though, I'd call your pedi; he might not be getting enough to eat.  Have you had his weight checked since you brought him home?

  • my daughter was like this, she was always awake and slept for short amounts of time.

sometime kids just don't act like they are supposed to.

she started to sleep longer at night once she hit 11lbs. that seems to be a magic number for a lot of babies.

when hey are little they are just hungry alll the time and that keeps them up.

    is he small?

also where in MA are you?

  • We went through the same exact thing with our DS for the first month.  Then he gradually started getting better and better.  I really thought it was never going to end and I thought the same thing - I have the only newborn that doesn't sleep anywhere near the "average" daily amount.   He'll be 3 months tomorrow and he just started sleeping through the night.  It will happen, I promise!

  • DS didn't/doesn't sleep much, either. If you add up all the time he's asleep how much does he get?

We FF, so it's easier to get him to sleep because we know how much he's getting (or that's how I feel, anyway). When your LO eats for 2 hours, how much is he getting? Maybe he needs to eat that long because he's not getting much. Is it worth it to you to try to pump and see how much he's getting? You might have to suppliment with formula for a day or two--I mean, if he's not getting enough, you might have to pump enough to store until you have enough to feed him for a day or two--just until you know if that's why he's not sleeping much and taking 2 hours to eat.

Good luck. He'll grow out of it.

  • To answer all your questions:

    - Yes he was small...5lbs 14oz...at discharge was 5lbs 8oz.

    - Pediatrician appt is today. Crossing fingers that he's bulked up!

    - Im concerned that he is not getting enough, but every time i feed him, he spits up. I always thought he did that because he overate!

    - I'm in Metrowest area of MA.

  • DS was like this for a while. ?He would be up every 1.5 to 2 hours and stay up for and hour or two and only took a 45 minute nap in the morning and late afternoon. ?My pedi said once they get to 12 lbs they tend to sleep better. ?Just this week DS has started sleeping 5 to 6 hours at night. ?We put him to bed around 10:30 and he isn't up to eat again until around 4. ?

  • he may also have a reflux issue if he's always spitting up - my DS had/has the same thing.  our pedi said that could be a cause for his lack of sleep...it used to wake him up.

then we started putting him down for naps on his tummy...that changed everything!  he now sleeps on his tummy for naps and at night and has been a great sleeper ever since.  I watch him closely and have monitors to make sure he's ok.

  • Holy lord...11-12lbs?!??!?!

     AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Crying

maybe call the pedi. sounds like he is hungry! if he is spitting up a lot he may had reflux which makes it hard for him to eat a lot.

what a little man.. so cute, i had a 10lb 13 oz baby. he was 1/2 the size of my 2 yr old! so cherish that little baby they grow fast!!! he will never be that little again.
