what formula should i use for constipation

My 3 week old newborn is constipated. The pedi has said they don't feel it's necessary to change his formula yet. But we've been going on 2 weeks of constipation now. We've tried corn syrup and prune juice in his formula as well as bicycling his legs when he's bearing down. My husband and I have decided to go ahead and change his formula anyway. We feel that's the next best step for our baby. Any suggestions for formula that may help with constipation?

  • I don't know that there's a real answer to this. DS was ok on Similac Advance Early Shield, but we switched him to soy to help congestion, it made him constipated, so we switched to Good Start. He hasn't been constipated since.

But he wasn't on Similac, either. They're both fine for DS, but your LO might be different.

  • It is going to take a good week for any new formula to really take effect (according to my pedi) so you are probably better off sticking with what you are using and just continuing to do what you are doing. At that age they are still just learning how to push and how everything works. I know it stinks to see them struggle but he will be OK. Just keep at it.

it is hard like you said. i hate to see him cry so much. but i know we need to have patience. it's just hard being a first time new mom. thanks for the support though.

  • Similac Advance was actually good to DS's constipation.  He had nice stools lol  Now he is on Soy (Similac Isomil Advance - but we do Parent's Choice brand instead) and they are hard as clay.
  • We started with that and eventually switched to GoodStart because of constipation.
