vacuum for birthday

I don't mean to sound ungrateful or spoiled but here is my situation:Yesterday was my birthday. My dh gave me my present last night and it was a vacuum! I have not ever said I wanted a new vacuum and it seems like the weirdest present to give your pregnant wife for her birthday! Money is not tight and we don't really need a new vacuum, so I was pretty surprised and I started crying. I really didn't mean to seem ungrateful for the gift, but come on man a vacuum for a b-day gift is so uncool. Am I way off or would you be upset too.

  • What is your history with presents with DH? If he's always given gifts like this, then I wouldn't get too upset- just make better hints about things you'd rather get as presents. If this is a total shocker, maybe ask him why he thought that would be a good present. You might get an interesting answer, and it'll probably spark up a convo about better presents he can get you in the future.

My DH and I tend to buy each other things we want/need but put off (like the GPS he's getting me for Christmas because I'm always borrowing his or the gun safe I bought him last year).

  • When I got a vacuum for Christmas I was super stoked because we REALLY needed one, but if we hadn't I would have def. though that a vacuum for a gift would be weird!
  • This is rather strange and kind of silly to me, no offense. I would actually be like WTF unless I said I wanted a new vaccuum. Maybe he thought you would want to start cleaning like crazy before LO gets here... so he thinks it would be a good gift for nesting.. I don't know what to say. I would be pretty bummed though. I'm sorry you didn't get something better Sad

  • Wow, that's right up there with a toaster or a new can opener. What on earth was he thinking? Men can be so dense sometimes! Happy Birthday to you though!!
  • One I would be upset too.

Two, try to remember he is a man and they don't always think.  lol.

My DF bought me laundry detergent for Christmas in a scent I really liked, I told him it was so thoughtful of him to offer to do laundry for the whole year.

  • I got a steering wheel cover, and couple other crappy gifts this year.

Sometimes my H gives awesome gifts, and sometime he gives awful gifts.  This year was awful...you're not alone.

  • I probably would have been upset, too, but try not to be too hard on him, sometimes guys are just clueless.  My birthday is Thursday, and our dishwasher needs replacing soon.  DH asked if I wanted a new dishwasher for my birthday.  I said, uh, no.  Indifferent  I want something a little personal!
  • I just started thinking about this more and I remember getting a Light Bright from one of my friends when i was about 20. I was thinking WTF? She got us all weird presents that year. She says she remembers me saying I wanted one.lol. No I did not. I can only think that maybe when talking about cool stuff we had as a kid I mentioned I loved my light bright. I kept it though and used it in my pool room and people had fun playing with it. Still kind of out there though.
  • I have no idea what he was thinking. I dropped tons of hints about needing some bigger clothes and needing to shop and maybe some new jewelry to wear while pregnant since clothes are not fitting. I think he is just that silly of a man! He really thought it was a nice gift and that is why I feel bad feeling bad about it but I am so emotional.

  • too funny, we JUST got a new dishwasher and he made a comment that that could be my present and I told him no way I need something more personal (and apparently that was a vacuum!)

  • LOL! This made me laugh so hard!!!!!

Been there, done that. I got an electric toothbrush for Christmas one year from my husband. We had set a $75.00 limit on our gifts because we just bought a new house. I had wanted an electric toothbrush but not from him and not for Christmas. It just seemed lazy to me like he hadnt put any thought into it and then thought, "OH, she's been wanting one of those!" The toothbrush didnt quite cost $75 so then he went to Sam's and bought a 2 years supply of toothpaste to go with it. Not kidding.  That was the worst gift ever. But now we can laugh about it.  Maybe he was just overwhelmed - but you do need to tell him he needs to do better than that in the future! :) So sorry. I remember how sad I was!

A two-year supply of toothpaste!  LOL!  BEST. GIFT. EVER.

  • Haha, that's what I got for my b-day...but I wanted a new one & specifically asked for it.  Sorry that wasn't what you wanted!  can you take it back & get something you do want?
  • I'm so sorry - Your post didnt make me laugh - I was trying to reply to rebecca_cross's post - the laundry detergent thing made me laugh. Not you getting a vaccum. I dont post very often so I have no idea what I'm doing!

  • Not sure what he was thinking but I understand where you are coming from...  FI got me floor mats for my car for christmas... ya it was awesome... :-/

Guys are weird sometimes... though, for valentines day last year he did get me a house cleaner every 2 weeks... now THAT was a great gift! (I think he was trying to make up for christmas! )

  • Thanks for all your sympathy and stories. It does make me laugh to think about how differently men think!

  • Rule #1:  No presents with a plug!!!

I got jewelry for my last birthday!

  • I guess I'm weird because I was super excited about the carpet steam cleaner I got for Mother's day!?

    ?

  • I only consider household appliances to be a good gift if I have asked for them. Last year for Christmas I got a Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer. I really, really wanted one, so that was good gift. A few years ago, I got a toaster for my birthday. I had not asked for a toaster. I didn't even think we needed a new toaster. I was really upset and cried about it and then felt like a total brat. Just how you want to feel on your birthday, right? He's usually really good at giving gifts, which just made it even worse. I think he learned a lesson though, and I don't think he'll ever get me another appliance unless I ask for it. So, yeah the vacuum would have upset me too. Just make sure he knows why you were upset so it doesn't happen again.

  • my hubby wants to get me one-my b-day is next wed.   i laughed at him.   i would like a massage :)   we could use a new vac though, but still not for my b-day!
  • My husband is totally the same way.  He believes in practical gifts, and never gives me anything sentimental.  For Christmas last year I got a leaf blower/vac... two years ago, I got fire extinguishers.  He just believes in getting me things that we need for the house, and that extras are just that... extra.
  • Men don't think right. Not that it's my husband so maybe it's a little different, but last year for Christmas by Dad bought me a 5 pack of flashlights that I totally don't need and the year before that he bought be a set of jumper cables- but then borrowed them the next day and I haven't seen them since.

This year my fiance bought me one of those crappy electric foot massager things so he no longer had to rub my feet- so it was kinda like a present for me- but not really!

  • id be miffed too. my mom was pretty upset when my dad gave her new kitchen utensils for christmas (shes not one of those who really enjoys cooking). that is strange unless you had asked for one, which you hadnt!
