Success after IF

Helmet home stretch but still a ways to go....

We had our second to last visit with Jack's orthotist today - his head looks GOOD ... but she and I both agreed that just a little bit more rounding out on what was the flat side would be great ... so we're going for another 4 weeks.  Urgh.  I can't believe I'm going that route, I am so ready to be done, but we've come this far, and he doesn't care about the helmet at all - so we're aiming for just a couple more millimeters of correction and then we're calling it a day!  4 more weeks will bring us to a total of .... 17!  I had hoped he'd be out of it in 10.  But it's a slow process .. correction is literally millimeter by millimeter.  And really, his head looks great now - this is just a final opportunity to achieve a little more roundness.  Frankly, my husband is balding and if Jack goes that route someday (or just wants to wear his hair super short, who knows what the style will be when he's a teen and later) - I just don't ever want him to be self-conscious about his head shape - so want to help him achieve as round a noggin as possible.

4 more weeks.  We can do it!

Wheee!

  • Good news!!!

  • Yay for Jack's rounding head!  :-)  He's so stinkin' cute in his helmet anyway.  haha.  I know it's probably a pain in the arse for you, but at least he's adorable in it.  It's gotta make it easier somewhat.

  • Yay! That's awesome :)

I actually wanted to ask you when you noticed the flatness?  My DS is only 3 1/2 weeks old, but REALLY favors laying with his head to the right.  DH and I do all we can to turn it and I nurse him so that he's always laying on the opposite side.  I'm worried he's getting a flat spot, but I'm also wondering if it's just too early to even be concerned.  WDYT?

  • At least the end is in sight!  I think you are doing the right thing.  And FWIW, he is too adorable in that helmet!

  • Has it really been 13 weeks?????  I'm glad that he doesn't mind the helmet and I think that you are right. . . better to get it done all the way. . . in the end, 4 weeks is not that long to ensure that his head is properly shaped for the rest of his life.  You are such a good mama!  And, he is adorable!!!!!

  • oh my gosh I can't believe how long he's been in it!  poor thing!  Wow, four more weeks, you can do it!
Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever! • The end is near!!  You are doing what is best in the long run and 4 weeks really is not that long - soon enough you will be tossing that helmet aside to reveal his beautiful noggin.
  • Wow -- he's doing great!  That's awesome that he's made so much progress and that it doesn't bother him.  Like you said, you've come this far, might as well go for the perfect head to go with that perfect face! ;)  You make excellent points looking long-term, and seeing how far he's already come, it sounds like a wise decision.  What a CUTIE PIE!!!

  • Great news! You can do it! This is definitely the home stretch. I look forward to our home stretch. Although, she really doesn't mind at all.   I think she likes all the attention when we are out & about!

Did they ever discuss night wear only? I have been wondering this but never remember to ask.

I look forward to your "graduation" post!

  • Maggie - we may do nights only that last week - although at that point, who really cares, we'll probably just keep it on all day and then once we're done, just be done!  My orthotist doesn't recommend doing nights only for more than a week or two at most at the end - because there can be growth during the day and that can affect proper helmet fit.  But it usually is an option that last week or so.  And - she (our orthotist) has sanctioned us at this point to "cheat" for a few hours here and there as needed so we have that option now too if we feel like having a helmet free baby on a special outing or something like that.
