2nd Trimester

Just checked out our first daycare...

and what a huge relief!

I have been a wreck all day worrying about it. I was so scared that the first one we looked at would be so bad I would be terrified to look at anymore. In my psychosis earlier in the day I was plotting to sell both our cars, move to a tiny apartment and eat nothing but ramen so that one of us could stay home.  So glad I chose this one to look at first, and now I know why I had a good feeling about it when I first found it!

It was in-home, and pretty close to our house. The house was nice, very clean, happy kids and only 4 of them. She has a degree in childhood education, lots of years working in preschools and has had her in-home for a couple years. I checked out her license, its all good and no complaints ever filed. She was very nice and instantly likeable. It just felt really good. She will also have an opening when I need it.

We have appts to look at several others, but what a huge relief to feel like I can do this.

  • Aww, that's so great you found a good one!!  You must be so relieved.  I will only have to work 2 days/week which I am so happy about (would have loved to stay home, but it's still a pretty good deal).  I am feeling the same anxiety and worries that you were feeling.  I hope that I find a place like you did so that I can feel better (that or I'll be having my IT hubby install some sort of nanny cam on baby's onsie so I can watch 24/7! hahaWink )

What questions did you ask her?  Did you stay for a while to observe?

  • She answered a ton of my questions before I even had to ask. That was really nice. Standard policy stuff, but on top of that:

    Can I come by anytime?

Does she take the kids anywhere?  (no...this was a requirement for us. There is a small playground 1/2 a block away but she only goes on days she has 3 kids or less.)

I asked about cleaning routines, how often stuff is cleaned. Very often, she has a written schedule posted for all areas that the kids are.

    Cpr training/her education

    What happens in an emergency

I have some more questions, but she gave us a packet that has most of the answers. I'm going to email her some other questions about infant routines and what her routines are with older kids. tv time, stuff like that. She does tons of art projects and one of the kids was so excited to show us, it was pretty cool!

  • Things I didn't think to ask about when I interviewed with the in-home daycare we used before moving:

Are there any guns in the house?  (The guys in the family hunted, so there were definitely guns...but they were locked in a cabinet at all times in a room that was off limit to kids.)

Do they have any pets or plan to get any?  (My in home daycare got a mastif while DS was there and they had several other dogs too.)

It is so nice to meet a in-home provider that you click with.  Hopefully you find the perfect fit for your family soon and can cross it off your to-do list.
