Airline travel - water for formula?

Has anyone travelled and brought water through security to make formula bottles? I don't want to have to buy 2 $6.00 bottles of water just to make formula on the plane ride. I am wondering if the water is already in the bottles if they will let me go through or do I have to premix the formula which then would require me bring an ice pack.

  • How do you feel about RTF?  We used that when we went to IL a few months ago and it was so easy to transport!!  We just bought a small can when we got there and used RTF on the way home...

  • I've travelled with bm and a sippy of water (for a toddler) before. It should be fine. They can test the bottles.

ETA: It might help to put the water in the bottle, so it doesn't look like it's for you.

  • I did.  I had the water in the bottle and the formula seperate.  I just showed it to security and they ran an extra test on it.

Okay, then I will plan on doing this. I will just fill my 2 larger bottles (10oz) with water and bring my smaller bottles empty. That will be enough for 3 bottles of formula and cereal and stuff.

  • don't forget you can usually get bottled water on flight for free...otherwise it's just a small extra hassle at security

  • I am flying Saturday with DS for the first time and checked out the TSA website to find out this exact question.

Per the website (watch the video on traveling w/ infants #2 and #3) you cannot bring water.  Formula must be mixed.  This will be a PITA for me but I guess I will bring DS' bottles premade in a small cooler and warm them up a little.
