I started taking met on Saturday morning. I'm currently on twice a day and will bump up to three times a day after two weeks. My doc warned me that I may have gi problems, but I'm feeling worse than I expected. I'm extremely nauseous and I've been eating when I take it. Any suggestions on what might make it easier on my stomach?
Re: side effects of met
I started off with a really dose. I started with cutting a pill in half (so I was taking 250mg). I took that for a few days then a full pill for another few days. Then I added a second pill.
I take one in the AM with breakfast and then one in the PM at bed time.
If you are taking it on a full stomach, try taking it on an empty stomach and vice versa.
I take 1500mg ... once a day, between 12pm and 2pm ... typically whenever I have lunch.
I took 750mg by doctor's orders for the first two weeks. During those two weeks I was nauseous and had very little appetite most of the time. It gradually decreased and I started feeling pretty good! The day I doubled the dose I was sick, but then I was fine after that.
Now, if I eat something too high in sugar, or too greasy, I feel sick. My doctor basically told me to only eat whole grains and natural sugars (fruit, basically) and on a limited basis. If I follow this, I feel fine. I ate ice cream on Saturday, which of course gave me a stomach ache ... but I was expecting it (and it was totally worth it!).
You should feel fine though, after those first couple of weeks. Good luck!

My doc started my dose out a little different... I started with 1 at my largest meal for a week, then 2 at my largest meal for a week, then 3 a day (1 with my 2nd largest meal) for a week, then 4 a day (2 and 2). I have hated it... I have had serious stomach issues.... nausea, diarrhea, just overall felt like crap.
If you haven't already, change your diet. The less fat and sugar in your system, the less discomfort you will have. Last week, I was absolutely miserable and have been more careful about what I'm eating and it has helped! GL!
I agree with everyone else so far. I am on 2000 mg daily -- I take 1000 in the am and 1000 in the pm. It truly does take a solid week or two to get past the sick feeling. But once I got through it, I have been fine. My only advice is, don't forget to take it! Once, by accident, I left it at home during a week long vacation and it was miserable getting myself back on the meds once I returned home.
Good luck!
