ideas for telling parents who live in another country?

All of our parents live in another country than us so I'm looking for ideas on how to tell them other than just a standard phone call.

They all have birthdays around the same time so was thinking of mailing birthday cards that say "Happy Birthday Grandpa or Grandma". But then putting a double envelope with a note saying to call before opening. I guess that's my biggest thing, is that I want to be on the phone with them, or possible on video ichat with them when they find out.

I also worry that by sending something, it might not get there in good time (it can take anywhere from 1-3 weeks for mail to arrive where they live).

 Any thoughts or brilliant ideas??

Can you do skype with them? I've never tried it, but I heard it was pretty cool. Then you can see their reactions!

Skype is a great way to go. ?This way you don't have to worry about something not getting to them in the mail and you will be able to see their faces.?

  • We did skype with my mom to tell her about #2.  DS wore the shirt in my siggy to tell her.
  • I called my mom in South Africa and said "Heeeey Grandma" and she said "Hello..wait..what did you say?" then she got soooo excited!!!

I didn't have the patience to wait to send her anything, and also wanted to hear her first reaction!

  • I live in the US and my parents live in Canada.  I skyped them and then said oh I have a cool picture I want to show you (while I was online with them).  They thought it was a cat picture, but went off to look at it and it was my u/s pic.  it was cute, and I could see their reaction to the news.
After 2 years of IF, and moving forward with adoption we were thrilled to discover we were pregnant with no intervention in 2009. Miss Molly joined our family in February 2010 and we could not be more in love with our little angel. Lilypie Second Birthday tickers blog www.grumpysnickles.com
