IKEA shoppers...

do they ever have anything available online?!?  We live 4 to 5 hours away from the closest IKEA stores.  I love a couple of their things, but there is no way I'm driving that far to pick them up.  Am I not seeing something right?  Seems like the could ship stuff if you have to assemble.

Re: IKEA shoppers...

  • They do!  I just don't really know why or how you're missing it.  I've never ordered anything online so I don't know how, but I know people who have done it.

  • You can order online or on the phone, but the shipping charges are WAY more expensive than the actual items.  It usually isn't worth it.

This.  Be prepared to spend hundreds in shipping on an item that costs less than 200 bucks to begin with.  It's insane.

They could, but really choose not to.  A few years ago you couldn't order ANYTHING online or over the phone.  Now you can get limited items, but the shipping charges are very high.

The IKEA business model wasn't set up to ship.  The reason they can keep prices so low in stores is because the economy of scale.  Most items are flat packed and come in big shipping containers to each store (most stores are close to major ports).

Other companies have a higher profit on the actual item, so they can afford to take a hit on shipping (hence free shipping codes).  IKEA has a lower profit margin on each item and charges you actual shipping value.  I ship pallets for work, and ACTUAL shipping is very expensive.

  • Well crap.   Guess it's back to the drawing board.  THANKS!

  • I love IKEA, and sometimes it's annoying that they don't ship many items.  However, I would HIGHLY recommend going to a store before you "invest" in anything.  Some of the pictures/quality levels are deceiving online.

Their products are cool and funky, but some are pretty shoddy once assembled.  Again, a trip to the store makes it easy to evaluate which products are worth buying.

Plus, it's a fun experience.  If you can somehow work it into a trip (I assume Chicago is the closest store to you) it can make for a fun long weekend!

  • I think it's time for a road trip =) Totally worth it, IMO.

I'm very spoiled though, I have an IKEA 20 minutes away, but I think most of their products in the 2nd tier price/quality level are worth every penny. Usually the cheapest item in each category is not worth it, though there are some exceptions.  If you follow the assembly instructions, most of their products are sturdy. If they give you glue, USE IT - Hubby skips this step, and I can already tell we're going to regret it.

  • I would go and check out their stuff.  Sometimes it is worth the trip if it is something that you really like.  I live directly across the street from the Ikea here.  We have the toy bins from there and they are awesome.  We love them and it makes cleaning up the toys at the end of the day sooooo easy.  We just take a bin and start at one end and fill it up.  They're great!
