Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

hcg levels & AF

I had a m/c a few weeks ago.  I had blood drawn 2 weeks ago and my level was down to 28.  OB asked me to wait 2 weeks, which is now, and take an HPT to make sure it's neg to be sure my levels went down i/o going to give more blood.  I got AF yesterday (Friday).  I took the test this morning just to do what she said and I think there was a faint line.  I don't want to spend another $20 to get a dig HPT just to confirm.  I can't call til Monday so I was just wondering...Can my levels be not at zero even if I got AF?  Has anyone experienced this?  TIA!

Re: hcg levels & AF

  • My situation was similar- I had blood drawn 1 month post d&c and it was 28 also.  Then @ 6 wks it was 8. I got AF a week or two after that.  My dr. said that once it is below 10 than it is possible to get AF and there is no reason to test levels after that.
You have to do what your most comfortable with, but if I was you I would wait and call the dr. Monday.

  • I believe that your levels can be above 0 before you can get AF just like you can get KU before your levels reach 0.  I believe they do need to be fairly low like previously mentioned.  I would not waste the $20 but you could try a dollar tree test which is only $1.  Where do you live?

  • Your AF comes when your progesterone drops below a certain level.  It's the progesterone drop - not the hcg drop - that triggers it.

So technically yes... you can still have some remaining hcg left in your system but have a "real" AF.

If your levels were already that low before and you've had an AF I would guess that you will begin a normal cycle even with a tiny amount of hcg on board.

And... if you'd like to become a POAS addict you can find test strips online for less than $1 a piece.  Or hit a local dollar store where you can find them for a buck.

Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
