XP: Thrush help- gentian violet?? Please come in!

I am almost positive I have thrush (again....I remember the feeling from dd#1) and I want to try gentian violet to try and get rid of it before it gets as bad as it did before. Do I just swab myself with it? I am not sure if dd has it and I want to start treatment right away so I haven't called the pedi yet but the gv has a small amount of alcohol in it- is it safe to swipe her mouth? Any other pointers are welcome! Thanks so much!

    Ah, that sucks!

    I had it and i HIGHLY recommend using GV for the treatment of thrush... Nystatin (sp?) is a pain the a$$, you have to administer it often and it can take weeks! GV is cheap and you can pick it up w/o a perscription. For me i only had to use it twice and it was gone.

    Put some on yourself and also a TINY bit in your LO's mouth. Use a cotton swab, and less is more - you don't need much of it, at all. GV is meant to go in a baby's mouth, you only use a tiny, tiny bit. GL!

    Oh yea... it's very messy if you didnt already know that. Make sure you have disposable breast pads for your bra and a crappy shirt and/or bib for DD b/c it stains...

    THis REALLY sucks, we are dealing with it right now too. I went to the DR and got prescriptions for soem anti-fungals, we are usign Nystatin drops in L's mouth, a diaper cream because he has a rash there as well & I have a cream for my breasts as well as a vaginal treatment because i am pretty sure I am starting there too, fun eh!

    I read up on the genetian violet, I have Dr Newman's book, he reccomends painting LO's mouth with it just prior to feeding & then nursing, then after wards painting your nipple & areola. Just do this once a day. He also reccoemnds gettign a prescriptipon for his nipple cream & using that after all other feedings.

    I read the articles on kellymom, here is the link, they reccomended Acidopilus as well, shich I started on. You should also boil in water with some vinegar any nipples, pacifiers, washable breastpads etc. Also wash your bras & nightgowns if they have been in contact with your breast in hot water with vinegar. I have been in agony for a few days now, Ibuprofren helps a bit with the pain. Good Luck!

    Ditto what the PP said. After 2 weeks of Nystatin (which made LO shriek!) 3 days of one application in the a.m. and it looks like we've licked it.?
