Help w/ GD breakfast

So this is the last week my OB is giving me to get my fasting and breakfast numbers under control before I have to go on insulin. I increased my Glyb at night to hopefully help with the fasting numbers but I am still having the hardest time finding the right things to eat for breakfast. I am supposed to have 15carbs and a protein. The problem is I leave very early for work and don't have time to cook, also eggs and cheese that early make me sick. I have tried low carb yogart and an atkins bar (approx. 7 carbs total) but my numbers are 120-130's. I have tried 2 pieces of low carb toast with peanut butter (15 carbs) and a piece of cheese (number still in the 130's). I have tried one piece of toast and pb, cheese, and an atkins bar (10 carbs total) and my numbers are still in the 130's.

Any other suggestions of food you don't have to cook, that is not dairy or fruit and won't make me sick to eat that early? TIA.

Re: Help w/ GD breakfast

  • Not sure if you are vegetarian or not but I do Bob Evans precooked sausage for breakfast... Cook in the  microwave for like 40 seconds and they are done. You might even be able to have a piece of toast b/c they are high in protein.

  • Breakfast was always my worst number of the day as well, although I've never went above the limit, I cut it close.

What I do almost every single day is the same now, and it works. South Beach Meal Bars are my breakfast. They have enough protein and carbs and vitamins that a "real" meal would... but don't raise my blood sugar all that much. I usually pair it with a cup of tea in the morning, and I'm pretty satisfied until lunch.

They also make some REALLY yummy flavors, too. Their chocolate and peanut butter meal bars are seriously as good as cookies.

  • Hmm, I would say maybe cook some breakfast sausage the night before and pop them in the microwave before work.

If I eat sausage and maybe 4 oz. of milk my numbers do ok, but breakfast is always my hardest meal. I can't do any bread or fruit at all. Sometimes I just have a sip of milk and some protein.

  • I eat turkey, egg and cheese on whole wheat toast with lots of butter and a small coffee every morning and it's never given me a high number. I have it as soon as I get to work, which is about 9am. Can you wait til you get to work to eat if eggs make you sick that early?
  • Sausage and biscuit. A small canned biscuit (not a Grand) is 14g carb. Bake a batch, cook sausage patties or buy pre-cooked. Add cheese if you want.  Assemble the sandwiches and freeze. In the morning just nuke'm and go.

  • I found these low carb microwavable breakfast bowls in the frozen food section -- turkey sausage, cheese, potato and egg and they always give me low numbers after (105 or less).  I don't know if you could handle the egg mixed in with other items but if so, this would be a great "on the go" option.
