Abnormal pap smear

I'm generally just a lurker around here but was hoping to get some feedback about this. ?Mr Dr. called me this morning and told me that my pap smear results were abnormal. ?He said that my HPV came back normal, which is a good thing (although I have heard that you can get a false negative with the test for HPV). ?He said that he wasn't too concerned and that he would retest in 6 months and if that was abnormal he would have to do a biopsy. ?I then told him that we were planing to TTC next month and if that was ok. ?He told me that he would prefer to not do a biopsy while I was pregnant, but thought the my chances of having to have on next time were probably not high. ?He told me that I could also just go ahead and get the biopsy now to rule anything out. ?I chose to do that. ?I guess I just can't help but to be nervous. ?I've never had an abnormal biopsy. ?has anyone else been in this situation? ?How often do abnormal results happen? ?Just trying to ease my mind. ?TIA!

Re: Abnormal pap smear

  • Better to be safe.  Although I realize the option isn't appealing I would say go for a biopsy.

  • I know it is scary, but try to remain calm.  Abnormal paps are very common.  As someone who did have a cone biopsy done when I was pregnant, I can say that you are making the right decision.  Get it out of the way now, so you don't have to worry about it while you are pregnant.  You want to be able to relax and enjoy your pregnancy.  Good luck!

  • Definitely do the biospy now if he will let you.  It's better to know now.  I had abnormal paps all through my pregnancy.  My OB did 3 colposcopies and I had to have a cone biopsy after DS was born.  If you can take care of this before you get pregnant, do it.  It's just one more stress you don't need.  GL!  I'm sure it will turn out fine.

  • I don't know much about it, but I would do the same thing for peace of mind.

  • I've had an abnormal one before, but the next one was fine & they've all been normal since then.  Abnormal results are very common.  Since you're ttc, I would go ahead & do the biopsy just to be sure everything is good before getting pg.
