another air travel question re:food

bc of the rules.....what were you able to take ONTO the plane? I usually travel with a insulated lunch bag with an ice pack in it when we go out. I don't want DD to only have snacks, I want her to be able to eat a meal as well. 5ish hr plane ride. Can you take sippy's with liquid in them? and extra? I am leaving Aug 31 and going by myself and I am already stressed out about this, losing sleep...I am going to take her car seat on the plane in hopes that will keep her "still" but how the heck do I get me, her, diaper bags AND seat onto plane???? ugh....I am crazy

Re: another air travel question re:food

  • You can totally bring food and "reasonable" quantities of juice/water/milk/formula for a baby. I flew in Feb and my diaper bag was loaded with puffs, jar food and water for formula (she was almost off it at the time). No questions at all from the TSA, you just need to declare it.

  • Yes, you take take sippys with liquid and food. They'll test your liquids, but its not a big deal at all. There is a family lane at security, and its pretty easy to go through.

I've taken an icepack through successfully before, but I don't think they knew I had it. It was in a zippered pocket on our case.

  • I took sippys with juice and milk. I also brought a jug of milk and an extra bottle of juice. One one trip they weren't even tested but I did declare them at security. On the trip home we were pulled aside and they were tested.

For food I took breakfast - pancacke, sausage link, grapes, blueberry muffin. Then I took snacks goldfish, raisins, fruit twists, cereal bar, dry cereal, fruit chews, sting cheese, crackers, Nilla wafers, and I know there's more but I can't remember. I didn't have all of this all at once, just the different things I remember takin at sometime.

As far as getting everything onto the plane by yourself, I stressed about that too. The CARES harness a Nestie lent to me was a life saver. I only had to worry about DS and 2 carry on bags. That harness just fit into his diaper bag. I guess if I had to take his convertible carseat I would have tried to invest in a little roller thing that I could have attached the seat and bags to or found a way to rig it up to wear it like a backpack.

  • We fly quite a bit with DS (31 flights thus far) and have had no problems bringing baby food/milk onto the plane. Put any soft/wet/pureed type food you are bringing in a plastic grocery bag and take it out of the carry-on just like you would your TSA approved ziploc for the 3-3-1 liquids rule for security. Do the same with the sippy cups. It just makes it easier for them to see, and avoids extra bag checks.  Tell the TSA officer that you are sending through baby food/drinks. We have brought on TONS of baby food, three days worth, and never been given a problem. Bigger airports are a bit more relaxed than smaller ones in general. As for getting on the plane, do you have an ergo or other carrier?  Whenever I fly alone with DS I put him in the carrier to get through security and onto the plane.  Don't be afraid to ask a gate agent or flight attendant for help if you need it, 99% of the time they are more than happy to help you out. Particularly if you bought your daughter her own seat. Our longest flight was 14 hours, and while not the most relaxing air travel experience in general people are really friendly and helpful.
  • Oh and to move the carseat around, we have a safe-fit care seat bag for about $25..it has wheels and back pack straps which makes getting it around very easy.  We got ours at Babies R Us, but they have them on amazon as well.
