High-Risk Pregnancy

help! just diagnosed with GD

I just failed my 3 hour.  :(  I have another week until i can take the class...so what's next?

The NP basically told me to try to eat protein and veggies but didn't give me much else in terms of guidelines.  I'm so confused!

Also, does this condition automatically make me high-risk?

Any advice would be helpful.  :)

Re: help! just diagnosed with GD

  • I was just diagnosed Monday. So trust me, I know exactly how you are feeling!! It is super overwhelming at first, but it has only been 3 days for me, and I am already getting the hang of it. It won't be that bad. It is just a lot of planning and measuring!

Unfortunately, if you have GD you are considered high risk. THIS freaked me out the most. But, the girls on here have some good links with a lot of info. I do not know what they are. I am sure someone will post them (if they haven't already).

  • I'm right there with you -- got the diagnosis call this morning (after flunking all four blood draws at my 3 hour yesterday). Left a message with the diabetes educator but haven't heard back. I'm really hoping I can get in to see her, like, tomorrow.

I'm doing a ton of web research now to figure out what the heck to eat. Seems everything I really like is off limits.

And I'm really not jazzed about the whole "high risk" thing. For now, I choose to ignore that.

  • Until you meet with your NP, try to balance your meals (carbs vs. protein). I was told for every 15g of carb there should be 7g of protein.  My doctor allows 30g of carb/14g protein for lunch and 45g of carbs and 21g of protein for dinner but I don't know if everyone is different.  The key is balance! For instance, if you want a sandwich you should look for low carb/no sugar bread (mine has a carb count of 10g per slice). Then you could add some grilled chicken and cheese for the protein. If you want to put lettuce or tomato on the sandwich, that would cover your veggie portion. Just try to limit heavy carbs and starches. Some quick snacks -- sugar free jello, cheese sticks, protein bars (Adkins has some really good options), scrambled eggs or anything else that is high in protein and low in carbs. I'm sure the girls here could provide some good recipes.  My doctor recommends checking my glucose level first thing in the morning (levels should be under 95) and 2 hours after meals and I have to be below 120. GL and I am sure you will do just fine once you get the diet guidelines. I know it can be really frustrating and scary before you talk to the doctor but do your best in the mean time and research some different options on the internet.

  • yeah...i can deal with being on a special diet...there are so many more serious things that i could have been diagnosed with.  i look at this as a blessing in disguise.  it will force me to abandon my crappy diet and be healthy for my baby.  :)

its just overwhelming to leave the drs office with almost no info and no clue what to eat "today."

thanks for the great info!  :)

they never told me that this makes me high risk...i wonder what this entails or if its just a label....

It varies from OB to OB - my OB does not treat it as a high risk scenario unless you cannot control your blood sugar through diet, exercise, and medication. Others may not feel the same way.

  • My doc just considers GD as high risk in the sense that it requires additional monitoring.  For example, he had me start going every 2 weeks when I was diagnosed (about a month ago), and I'm also having monthly growth ultrasound to track LO's size.

As long as you control your sugar level with diet and exercise (and insulin if necessary), the only real risks I see are possible earlier delivery and/or larger baby.  My doctor seems to think with my progress so far I should be able to carry to full term with no issue.

Welcome, ladies!  You'll get sick of the diet, some days are definitely easier than others.  But overall, it's not that bad if you have supportive people in your life!  Smile  For example, I don't get much sympathy from DH and he refuses to go on the diet, so when I'm sad I call my best friend and we talk about the delicious dinner/dessert we'll get once LO is born.  Stick out tongue
