Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Well, that's not fair.

A friend of mine just had a baby a week ago. She just posted on FB that he slept for EIGHT HOURS last night without waking.

I'm jealous. Lili woke up every hour when she was a newborn. I wanted to rip my breasts off and throw them away.

I thought you were supposed to wake to feed every three hours, though? Maybe I'm thinking incorrectly.

Re: Well, that's not fair.

  • That is amazing for a one week old.  I would be scared so I would probably wake them.  But technically I think you only have to wake them if they aren't gaining weight?

  • For the first few days pedi said to wake every 3 hours, even at night... then 3 hours during the day, but let sleep as long as they would at night.
  • Wow! Maybe she had a really big baby? I thought you were supposed to wake and feed every 2 hours for a while, but I had a <5lb baby, so maybe it's different for big babies.

  • No fair. Maddie was definately up every hour for the first three weeks.

  • i am sure it is a fluke, lucky for her though.  I have heard these stories.  DS barely sleeps 8 hours now!

  • If the baby is back up to his birth weight, docs usually tell you not to wake to feed. If I was her, I wouldn't get my hopes up! There were nights were ds went 6-8 hours - but those were few and far between as a newborn!!!
  • some people say never wake a sleeping baby, but i think for the first 6 weeks or so it is recommended that you feed them at least every 4 hours. after that waking a baby seems downright crazy to me. but lets be honest, if i was super exhausted the first week i might savor just one night of sleep! i can't say for sure b/c i was never blessed with that opportunity. this kid of mine loves to eat!

  • I think that he was nearly nine pounds, so yes, a bigger baby. He's a chubby-cheeked little guy and just adorable. He was also an overdue baby - almost 42 weeks!

I would have killed to get eight straight hours of sleep. I can't even imagine.

And yes, that does make sense about waking up to feed if the baby is smaller or not yet back to their birth weight.

  • is she ff?

we were told to wake alaina every 4 hours until back to birthweight (took close to 2 weeks). however, I don't think i ever had to wake her, except in the hospital. she woke me. it was on the boob for an hour, off for an hour for a longass time. i laugh at anyone who says babies only nurse for 20 minutes. tell that to my child who averaged over an hour, sometimes 1.5.

You know, I'm not sure. I feel weird asking anyone about that. I usually end up offending in some way, even if I simply ask, "Are you FFing or BFing?"

I never had to wake Lili either. She would just nurse and nurse. My nipples were cracked and hurt so badly I would cry when I would BF her in the beginning. One time I gave her back to DH and said, "I can't do it. It hurts too much." He tried giving her formula, and she spit it out and was screaming.  I remember one night she was nursing on average 30-45 minutes for each feeding.

  • DS had jaundice, which made him sleepy, so his pedi had us wake him every 2-3 hours to nurse, at least for the first 2 months.
  • Our pedi said we could stop waking after DD was up to her birth weight.  Didn't really matter for us though because she was up all.the.time.

A co-worker of mine has a two week old who is sleeping in 6-8 hour spurts.  He said his first was up non-stop until 18 months.  It gives me hope that maybe # 2 will be a sleeper!

I love hearing things like this- we are praying #2 is at least a little better than DS. He'll be 18 months next week and he only STTN randomly, maybe a couple times a week. When he doesn't STTN, he raises it to an art form.
