breakfast ideas for a toddler?

Hi my ds is 3 yrs old,the only thing right now he will eat for breakfast is mini muffins and a banana, then he seems hungry again like 10:30 -11am so i just give him some cheerios to munch on before lunch,? it just doesn't seem to be filling him up enough and i think he needs to eat some different foods, problem is he won't try anything,he 's developmentally delayed ,oral motor problems, everything he smells before he eats it even things he eats everyday,i just don't know how to get him to try anything else,he's starting preschool next month which he will go in the mornings 5 days a week ,if anyone has any suggestions for me,thanks

  • Kate eats the same thing every single day for breakfast, fruit of some kind and cold cereal with milk.  Right now she's on a granola kick.  Before she started this, though, she ate all kinds of things.  Here are some suggestions, not sure if they will work for your son:  frozen waffles with cream cheese or peanut butter on them, eggs (Kate likes omlets and scrambled with cheese in them), yogurt, smoothies (you can all all kinds of filling and good for you stuff, even hide veggies and peanut butter in there), maybe make denser muffins (I make some with carrots, pineapple and zucchini in them).  HTH.

  • Hmmm.  That is tough.  First of all though, I don't think its unusual for 3 yr olds to need a mid-morning snack, and I'd be suprised if his preschool doesn't do a snack time in the morning.

Will he try different try different types/flavors of mini muffins?  If so, maybe try a raisin bran muffin for him, or make them with whole wheat flour instead of all purpose flour.  I'd think those would fill him up a little more.

  • My dd's love bagels (with cream cheese or peanut butter), pancakes (whole wheat), cereal bars and frozen waffles. Hth!
  • My almost 3 yo eats the following for breakfasts all with cups of milk:

    Bagel and a yogurt

Bowl of cereal and some fruit

2 waffles w/ yogurt and fruit

    Oatmeal

    a muffin w/ fruit salad

2 eggs, turkey bacon, toast and fruit

    HTH!!

  • DS eats a bowl of cereal for breakfast every morning.  He always has a morning snack of either orange wedges or a banana or yogurt.  He eats lunch and then always has an afternoon snack of either goldfish, animal crackers, grapes or yogurt.

I think it is normal for kids to eat small meals throughout the day and that him wanting a snack around 10:30 is totally fine.

Also, preschool will most likely follow that eating schedule as well (morning and afternoon snack time).

  • The girls usually have pancakes, waffles or cereal with a fruit or yogurt for breakfast.  I make a double batch of pancakes every week or two and freeze them so then I can just zap them in the mornings.  On weekends, sometimes DH makes muffins or cinnamon rolls or something.  They also have a snack sometime around 10 even with lunch at 11:30ish.  They just have fruit or yogurt (something they didn't have with breakfast) or grahm crackers or something like that.  At the girls' school, they give them a snack around 9:30 or 10ish anyway.  They will go two days a week from 9-2.  They have snack around 9:30 or 10ish and then lunch around 11:30 with naps shortly after.  (DD#1's nap is later, I think, they do something after lunch before nap.)  Anyway, my kids seem to need to eat every 3-4 hours anyway.  They have an afternoon snack too in between lunch and dinner.  As long as it's healthy and relatively easy, I think it's fine.
  • DD and I have oatmeal for breakfast most mornings, that or a donut. She loves it with a little brown sugar and milk or the instant ones in a package.
