NBR: Unemployment

Can you collect if you quit? I am dying and don't know how much more of my job I can take.

Re: NBR: Unemployment

  • No, I dont think you can.

  • Highly doubtful.

If that were the case I know alot of people that would quit their jobs for a free vacay on the system...

  • In Mass I think the rule is you can collect if you quit for good cause i.e. unsafe working conditions, broken contract, etc.  I quit once because my boss was a raving lunatic and I could not collect.   Laws are different in each state though so you should look into it.

Damn. My work environment is a hostile one to the point it has made me physically ill. I've been trying to get out for more than 2 years. I might have to just quit and go work at Target or something. I am serious, I can't keep coming back here. I am losing my mind.

  • No, unless you had a REALLY valid reason. And I think you'd have a really difficult time proving that in this economy.

You'll have to do something to get you fired. Maybe start coming in really late and taking long lunches. That will get you out the door and without you having to do anything drastic and dangerous to get fired. I feel weird telling someone how to get fired, but if your situation is that bad, I'd do anything I could to leave.?

However-- if it was me, I'd be job searching right now, and once I found another job, quit.

I don't think that will work either. In most states you can't collect if you're fired for cause.

  • "You'll have to do something to get you fired..."

In my state at least, even that wouldn't work, or everyone would do that too. You have to get let go due to other circumstances outside you're control (budget cuts, etc...) rather than being a crappy employee. Otherwise the fault is on YOU, not your employer. That would be almost the same as quitting. For example, if you just stop showing up to your job and they fire you, you wouldn't get it. I would definitely look into it before doing something stupid like that and shooting yourself in the foot!

  • no, but check with your state. you may be able to under certain and specific circumstances.

  • In the state of Ohio, if you are fired or laid off, you can collect unemployment.?
Not sure about other states, though.

I know someone that was fired for always coming to work late, and he has been on unemployment for the past 4 months. As long as you show proof that you are looking for a job (weekly), you can stay on it.
  • You generally can't collect if you're fired, either.

  • Yes, you can but you may not get as much and may take longer to get.

  • I got fired from a job and was able to collect... HOWEVER... I ha to fill out a ton of forms for it, and they actually have to investigate why I was fired.  Turns out the company had no just cause to fire me, so I was able to collect.  I only collected for 6 weeks...

  • Really NNO? Do something to get fired? What a great way to ruin her professional name. I don't care how much you hate your job, you always try to go out on peaceable terms. Who knows when you might see a person from that job in your career further down the line.

Ruffles, if you hate it that much, give your notice and find a new job to tide you over till you find something in your field..
